The Morning Chronicle (London, England), Thursday, July 1, 1824 tells us that a man of the name of Charles Callaghan of Mountshannon was returning from the fair of Tomgraney and, when passing though Scariff, encountered a number of people to whom he announced that he was an Orangeman. A man rushed from the crowd and struck him with a club, killing him instantly. At an inquest conducted by Thomas Sampson Esq it was determined, among other things that the person who struck him and was suspected of murder was James Morony of Clonesker.
