Kerry Local Authorities - Graveyard Records

Post by pwaldron » Sat Jul 30, 2011 9:15 pm

A neighbouring county has an excellent new website which has just been brought to my attention:
http://www.kerrylaburials.ie/en/About.aspx

Does anybody know if Clare County Council or any local archive has similar records for any Clare graveyards?

Over 140 cemeteries are currently either controlled or owned by Kerry Local Authorities. Is the situation similar in Clare?

Hi Paddy,

On the Clare CoCo site at http://www.clarecoco.ie/community/infor ... kers/#west burial ground registrars and caretakers are listed but as far as I can see the list doesn't cover all the Clare graveyards by a long way.

Maybe those people keep records and it wouldn't surprise me if some Data Protection regulation prevents them from sharing their information, ha ha. Fortunately the Clare Roots Society is documenting the Clare graveyards at a rate of knots but, of course, many of those inventories (which are published on the Clare Library website) are valid as of the date they were drawn up and certainly the ones I have contributed haven't been updated.

Paddy C.

P.S. The Clare County Council (CoCo) provides grants for restoration and maintenance of cemeteries (see http://www.clarecoco.ie/community/grant ... nt-scheme/ ) so presumably they accumulate documentation on some of the Clare cemeteries that way. Whether that info would work its way into a comprehensive CoCo inventory of burial grounds is another matter. The County is full of ancient burial grounds which haven't been used for decades or centuries (except by the dead) and the CoCo is presumably unlikely to be interested in those. P.
