Hi from Australia,
I am tracing our family history and have come to a bit of a brick wall, my great great grandmother came from Quin as did her husband, I have a name of Magaret Canneen, or similar, i think her husband was Patrick bourke, who in turn had two sons, Patrick ( born approx 1860) and John, Patrick Jnr immigrated to Australia where he married Ann Maria Rose and lived in singleton, NSW. would appreciate any information as I can't seem to find any Canneen's who came from Quin.. not even sure if this is the right spelling..
my email is nettles58@bigpond.com
cheers
Annette

Re: Bourke/Cannenn family
Annette,
Your name Canneen is probably a misspelling. Cunneen is a common name in Ireland (anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Coinín (or Ó Coinín) ‘son (or ‘descendant’) of Coinín’, from a byname from coinín ‘rabbit’ or from cano ‘wolf’) and is the more likely spelling. A variant is Cunnane. Go to the Clare Library site at http://www.clarelibrary.ie and search for Cunneens and Cunnanes. There are zillions of them listed there. You'll have a great time trawling through them.
