Searching for any record of Bouchiers or Bouchers

Post by olebouch » Fri Jul 01, 2011 1:20 am

I am searching for any record of a Bouchier or Boucher in the vicinity of Feakle. My ancestor, Michael, son of John, left in 1870, from a family of Blacksmiths. I have traveled to Feakle, in December, 2010, and found almost no record of their being there. Does anyone know anything about the Bouchier family or what happened to them?

Have you searched the Clare library website using their search options at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/search.html?

Searching for 'Bouchier Boucher' results in a number of references: http://google.clarelibrary.ie/search?en ... 6&filter=0

The search results highlight a source with many references to both names - the Births/Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths records for Feakle (Lower) RC Parish Baptism Records, 1860-1881 at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... ptions.htm

Also, if you go to the library website Genealogy page and click on the 'Combined list of surnames...' link for the Tithes (1820s), Griffith's (1855) and 1901 Census you will see at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... mbined.htm that there are records for Bouchier in all three, and for Boucher in two.

Since I am interested in the Donnellan family of Ballycroum/Ballycrown, Feakle, I keep an eye out for Feakle folk. With all the databases now online, it was fairly short work to put together some data for your Boucher family, shown below in reverse chronological order, for the most part. I focused on just the Feakle ones and not the Mount Shannon/Scariff ones.

More specifically I am looking for a John Bouchier of Feakle. He is the father of my great grandfather Michael Bouchier. Michael was born in 1853, and ended up in Joliet, IL running a blacksmith shop with his brother James. It was on their arrival in the States that their dropped the i, and went simply as Boucher. To my knowledge, John Bouchier and his wife, Mary Hoolihan never left Ireland. It is any evidence of them that I am looking for. The family came from Leaghort, I believe a parish just north of the town of Feakle. Since Michael was born in 1853, and was not the first born son, I am assuming that John was born in 1833 or earlier. The church records for Feakle begin in the 1860s. I found a record of Michael and his sister serving as godparents for Michael's brother Harry, but still no mention of a John Bouchier.
