History of Clare: 1823

Chris,

You'll find some postings in this forum (for example, just enter '1823' in the search facility and you'll find something on insurrections) and there is a lot of material on the Clare Library site at http://www.clarelibrary (again, just enter '1823' in the search facility to start off with and also browse around the site a bit).

Also, read "Ireland Before the Famine" by Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh (Gill & Macmillan, 1972 and 1990).

The historians lurking on this forum might like to add other reading lists.

Hi Chris.
A quick search on Google for "ireland 1823 insurrection" brings up some interesting links to:

"The main cause of civil unrest in Ireland in the 1820s was poverty combined with unemployment. The payment of tithes to the Church and onerous property rents to landlords were also constant sources of discontent and causes of rebellion. Many of those convicted under the Insurrection Act of 1822 were known as Whiteboys." For more see http://www.tocal.com/homestead/vandv/vv05.htm
and
"The Rockites caused a serious insurrection in January, 1822, in Limerick, Kerry, Cork and Tipperary. It was so determined that five extra regular regiments had to be sent from England to reinforce the local garrisons. An Insurrection Act, with curfew at night and trial without jury, was proclaimed in the south-west counties and 1,500 Munster men were immediately arrested, more than 200 transported to the Penal Colonies and 36 executed in February, 1822, alone. But raids and ambushes continued." For more see http://www.irishdemocrat.co.uk/anonn-is ... rebellion/
and see
"Social Life in County Clare, 1800-1850" on the Clare library site at
