Clare baptism records on microfilm: are they complete ?

Post by Paddy Casey » Fri Apr 20, 2007 3:40 pm

I have been trying to find out whether the microfilmed Clare baptism records at the NLI are complete, i.e. whether all the Clare parish records were microfilmed. I have spoken to the duty archivist at the NLI and to the Killaloe ecclesiastical archivist in Ennis but neither was sure whether the records are complete.

Now, in a website just flagged by Sharon Carberry ( http://homepage.eircom.net/%7Ejohnbquig ... lStory.htm ) I read "Parish records for Cooraclare are in the custody of the local Parish priest and have not been microfilmed. Another Parish, Killimer, some 6 miles East of Kilrush, is the birth place of Kate Mangan, wife of Peter Mescall. Again parish records are in local clerical custody and have not been microfilmed. (my italics).

So here is evidence that at least two sets of parish records were not filmed.

This seems to be a good place to post a bit of information from a
Clare Heritage Centre report by Antoinette O'Brien, although it may not
answer Paddy's question directly. In reference to a Catholic family
being researched and in a section describing baptisms, the report issued in Dec '04 states:

"...it is important to remember that out of a total of 47 Parishes in Co. Clare only 4 have registers pre-dating 1820."
