Mr. McNamara - First name missing

Post by Sduddy » Sat May 21, 2011 9:13 pm

I would like to find out the first name of a Mr. McNamara, mentioned in a newspaper cutting that I found among some bits and pieces left by a Clare relative. The cutting is torn (along the crease mark I think) and only the second half remains (see attach.) and there is no date. The back of the cutting lists areas, which are in Massachusetts, I think. This is shown in my second attachment.
As to the date, I think the year must be after 1922, when the BBC was founded.
The Paris Exposition referred to may be one of three: International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts held from April to October 1925;
International Colonial Exposition held for six-months in 1931; International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life held in 1937.
The ship, Transylvania, referred to, must be the second Transylvania (the first Transylvania of the Anchor Line was sunk by a German submarine in May 1917). According to the entry on Wikipedia this second Transylvania was launched in Glasgow on 11th March, 1925, but I cannot find a passenger list.
The ship, Cameronia, referred to must be the second Cameronia (the first Cameronia, of the Anchor line, was sunk by a German submarine in Apr. 1917). The second Cameronia was built in 1920, but again I cannot find a passenger list. The westbound July 1926 voyage seems a possibility but, if there is a passenger list, it has not been transcribed.
Is finding the first name of this Mr. McNamara an impossible task? If anyone has suggestions about my next step I would be very thankful.

Sheila.

Having reached the quota of attachments, I deleted the attachments to this posting on Oct. 27, 2017, in order to make space for my transcription of Kilnoe marriages and baptisms. Sheila

Lawrence and Catherine McNamara both aged 50 returned to Boston on SS Transylvania which sailed from Dublin on 31st July 1937 arriving in Boston on 8th August 1937. They were returning to their home at 29 Hendrick Street, Providence Rhode Island. Lawrence held a US Passport No 425359 issued at County Court Providence R.I. in 1912. Catherine had US passport by marriage. They had left the US on 26th May 1937 on the same ship, giving their address in Ireland as Dromod Co Roscommon and their occupations were ‘car operator’ and ‘housewife’.

Sheila

Ignore my previous posting. The person in question was John McNamara (US born, DOB 13 Sept 1894, Passport No 432131) who travelled from Boston on the Transylvania arriving in Dublin 27 June 1937. Occupation Radio Executive. Address in Dublin - 197 North Circular Road. He arrived back in New York on 1 Aug 1937 having sailed from Belfast on the Cameronia on 24 July 1937. He worked with O'Berne De Witt Travel Bureau in Boston.
