John Wall of Springmount killed by Whiteboy mob (1780)

Post by Paddy Casey » Fri May 09, 2008 6:43 pm

Here an example of Whieboy violence from the General Evening Post (London, England), Saturday, October 14, 1780.

Mr Luke Wall of Springmour (sic) in the Barony of Tulla in the County of Clare was attacked by a mob armed with guns, pistols, bayonets, etc. and his servant John Wall was ".....murdered in a manner too shocking to relate".

There was a sequel to this (St. James's Chronicle or the British Evening Post (London, England), Tuesday, August 7, 1781). A posse from Douas and Castleconnel went after the ringleaders and surprised them in their beds at Ballymoloney. A man called Slattery and his son Daniel Slattery were apprehended and taken to Ennis. Several of the villains escaped in the darkness of the night, specifically Martin Madden, alias Paul Jones, who had to decamp quite naked, leaving his Clothes behind him. In this report the place is called Springmount.
