Carroll/Hickey/Harding of Kilkee

Post by topher0577 » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:40 pm

Hello All

I was wondering if anyone could help me with my research for information about a relative of mine from the 19th century please.

This link to some graveyard information on the Clare Library website:

http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... ptions.htm

contains a transcription that mentions Margaret Carroll of Caherline, Caherconlish, Limerick (1828-1904).

The transcription reads:

" In loving memory of Margaret Hickey died 13th May 1907 aged 76 years Cornelius Hickey died 11 Dec 1910 aged 92 years Margaret Ann Hickey died 9th June 1923 aged 40 years Dear Lord have mercy on them sweet mother of God intercede for them while they need it.
Flagstone: Hickey of Kilkee 1862-1960. Of your charity pray for the souls of Patrick C Hickey MD JP 1854-1938 Maria Bourke of Barbane his wife 1853-1940. Father Cornelius MRCS 1884-1956 PP Boars Head Oxford 1944-1956 Augustus MC Major RAMC 1887-1934 Plymouth. Margaret 1882-1923 Grandparents Cornelius Hickey of Abington, Co Limerick 1827-1910 wife Margaret Carroll of Caherline 1828-1904 who rest here and their kinsmen of Ballyhickey and Drim who lie in Quinn Abbey R.I.P.
Flagstone: Rose G Harding, Kilkee died 20 Nov 1972 R.I.P. "

...

Margaret Carroll married Cornelius Hickey in Caherconlish, Limerick, 1850 and eventually moved to County Clare.
I am a descendant of the Carrolls of Caherline (Caherconlish) from the 19th Century, but I don't know much about Margaret Carroll.

I have found Margaret and Cornelius in the 1901 Ireland census online:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... n/1077452/

but I was wondering if anyone knew anything more about Margaret or whether anyone could put me in touch with someone who may please?

I have some more information about their son (Patrick Hickey) and his family here in 1901:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... r/1080017/

and here in 1911:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... nd/362088/

Their youngest daughter is Rose Hickey, who became Rose Harding and is on the headstone above.

I was wondering if anyone who is a relative of the Hickey or Harding family might be able to help me please.

I appreciate that this is a bit of a long shot, but any information would be very useful to me.
Many thanks

There is lots of published material on the Hickey family of Kilkee and on their ancestors, e.g.

- Burke's Irish Family Records (1976) pp.586-9

- http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... family.htm

- Hickey, J. 'The O'Hickeys: hereditary physicians to the O'Briens of Thomond and some of their descendants' in "North Munster Antiquarian Journal", vol. 8, no.1 (1958), pp.38-41.

Lt-Col. Julian Hickey, M.C. (1890-1965), the author of the last-mentioned article, was a grandson of Cornelius Hickey and Margaret Carroll, so may also have researched the Carrolls. The Burke pedigree shows that he left numerous descendants, and gives 1976 addresses for several of them.

Julian Hickey and Rose Harding's sister Mary E Hickey (1891-1973) married Freddie Kerr (1897-1984), a bank manager in Kilkee, whom I knew well, although I don't know any of their descendants personally. Their grandson is Bobby Kerr of Insomnia (cafes) and Newstalk (radio). He is contactable via http://www.bobbykerr.com/contact-bobby/ and might know whether or not any family member is interested in family history.

Cornelius Hickey is said locally to have come from co. Tipperary to teach in the school in Kilcasheen townland which preceded the current Moveen National School in the adjoining townland. My own grandmother was one of the first pupils in the latter school when it opened in 1890. Cornelius Hickey may have been the first teacher in the new school. I know where I can lay hands on the booklet produced in 1990 for the centenary celebrations, which might give more details.

There may also be more details in the Casey Manuscript in the Killaloe Diocesan Archives. This was written by retired schoolteacher Thomas Casey in around 1935 and is cited in many publications on Fr Michael Meehan and the Little Ark of Kilbaha, as Casey served mass for Fr Meehan in the Ark and was sacristan in Carrigaholt for many decades - into his 90s. I'm afraid my old notes from Casey are not as clear or well-documented as they should be. Casey taught in several local schools, apparently including the one in Kilcasheen. My notes say that he was succeeded by the late Mr Hickey, but Casey appears to have been younger than Hickey, so this may be wrong.

This old school in Kilcasheen later served as a residence for Moveen teachers including John Keane (c.1880-1955) and his wife Jane Ann (nee O'Connell) (1879-1945) until the construction of Moveen House as the official teachers' residence. (Jane Ann was a lifelong friend of my grandmother and said that they were third cousins, although I have not yet succeeded in documenting that relationship.)

The teacher's son P. C. Hickey was registrar of births, marriages and deaths in Kilkee, at least in 1883. He was also a champion hammer thrower and weight putter, and in that capacity was the subject of a permanent exhibition at the Clare Heritage Centre in Corofin which may still be on display. In Thom's Directory 1924, `Hickey, Patrick C., M.D., Clifton-terrace, Kilkee' is listed as a former Justice of the Peace for County Clare.

Rose Harding owned a house in Albert Place, Kilkee, but my recollection is that it was rented to a Dr. O'Dea and that Rose lived elsewhere. By coincidence, the daughter of John and Jane Ann Keane later (1977-8) briefly owned the Albert Place house.

You will find several Hickey obituaries in the Clare Champion - see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... pionh4.htm

That should keep you busy for a while!

Paddy
