Charles M'Donnel of Kilkee wins prize for plantation (1743)

Post by Paddy Casey » Sun May 04, 2008 7:50 pm

In 1743 the Dublin Society awarded premiums for various Articles of Husbandry (Daily Gazetteer (London Edition) (London, England), Friday, July 1, 1743).

Charles M'Donnel of Kilkee was awarded a premium for planting, in 1742, 90 acres with 7461 apple trees and 2214 Wildings* in hedge rows. He surrounded the plantation with a 6 foot wall.

This strikes me as a remarkable achievement for those times - all done with manual labour and requiring a lot of time and effort for the grafting.

See also http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... er5.17.htm for notes of other tree-planting achievements in the county. I see there that Charles M'Donnel - there described as "...the late..." got another award in 1789.

Are there still any signs of the plantation ?

* Don't ask me what Wildings are.
