In 1743 a Dutch ship heavily laden with treasure got into difficulties and ended up in Ballyvaughan harbour (London Evening Post (London, England), Thursday, January 20, 1743). If the newspaper report is correct the value of the cargo in modern day terms is staggering.
The account which is attached here is a little confusing and one is left wondering what happened to the remains of the treasure. Was it distributed among the inhabitants of Ballyvaughan or did it end up, as the law of the time would probably require, in the King's coffers ?
Does anyone on this forum know anything more about this incident ?
