Ennis Assizes 1682

Post by Paddy Casey » Sat May 03, 2008 3:27 pm

This PDF-attached account of an Ennis assizes of 1682 from the Loyal Protestant and True Domestick Intelligence (London, England), Tuesday, May 30, 1682 reports sentences against:

Commissioner Reddan for conspiring to take away the life of Ignatius Sarsfield of Canagh in the County of Clare;

Richard Moor for felony;

William Flobert for petty larceny (to be whipt)

Cranmer Molony, guilty of felony;

Morgan Brian for subornation (to stand in the pillory for 2 hours and then be discharg'd);

John Hickey (arraigned and found guilty as a common cheat).

The account of the Reddan conspiracy is gripping but apart from that it seems to have been a tedious day at the assize. There were no hangings in chains or publick flogging or other penal entertainments to leaven the proceedings.
