Attack on Mr & Mrs Irwin, publicans in Sixmilebridge (1848)

More from the Clare police blotter: the Preston Guardian etc (Preston, England), Saturday, March 18, 1848 reports a brutal attack on William Irwin, a publican in Sixmilebridge, and his wife. Despite the ferocity of the attack they managed to beat off the assailants. A pistol, heavily loaded, a bayonet and a hat which had been left behind were deposited in the police barracks by John Augustus Ievers, Esq.

The motive ? Irwin was "....known to be worth money...".
