Inis Cathaigh Scattery Is.

Post by moc66 » Sun Apr 27, 2008 8:10 pm

Hi
Uploaded onto the clarelibrary.ie are this fine collection of family names and history since Friday 25th dealing with population of Scattery Is. since earliest times.
'Inhabitants of Scattery Island, Shannon Estuary, Co. Clare' by Senan Scanlan
I have no doubt this will be a huge resource not only to people directly connected to Scattery but also to many from West Clare as well. It follows on many publications dealing with the history of the island including the recent Clasp publication 'Memories of An Islander' by Don Scanlon.
I have not got around to going through it with a fine comb but just one observation on an extract from log of pilot boat circa 1893 ref to Denis O'Keefe being in charge. Denis was residing in Querrin Co Clare at the time. According to his grandson Martin O'Keefe he was the fourth member of the family to have held that position. The post being handed from father to son. He is recorded as being a pilot in the 1901 census though he is 65yrs of age. His son Jerimiah (Jim) was not accorded a pilot's license when he returned from the USA in 1910's and turned to fishing on the Shannon for many years. His son Martin fished as well but emigrated to US in 1947 and has been there since. Martin celebrated his 95th birthday in Rochester NY last Nov where he was honoured for his lifetime contribution to Irish Trad Music. He is a regular visitor back to Clare for the Willie Clancy Week in Miltown Malbay every year for last 20yrs or more.
Denis O'Keefe signed of on the as..Signed Denis O’Keeffe Pilot Western Division.
This latest addition to what is already on the clarelibray site will be immense congratulations to all involved. Michael

Hi
Here are accounts of the securing of The Windsor Castle as reported by The Limerick Chronicle and copied by other news media of the time. When the salvage money was secured by the Westren Pilots a year later they were able to move from Kilbaha to Scattery Is.
