The Examiner (London, England), Sunday, August 19, 1838 reports that the trial of Catherine Guthrie for poisoning her husband at Ennistymon has been put forward to the 1839 Ennis Assizes. The husband died in February 1838. We are also told that Ann Rowen, also of Ennistymon, is in custody for administering poison to her husband and father-in-law who, it is hoped, will survive the wicked attempt. The brother of one of the prisoners was hanged in 1830 for shooting a woman with whom he cohabited.

Ennistymon was, it seems, a hazardous place in the 1830s.
