Abduction of Honora McMahon; P & M Connell convicted (1834)

Post by Paddy Casey » Mon Apr 21, 2008 7:53 am

The The Morning Chronicle (London, England), Thursday, July 17, 1834 reports that Patrick and Michael Connell were convicted of assaulting and carrying away Honora McMahon in January 1834 at Killuran with intent that one John O'Dea should marry her. She was dragged out of her bed in her chemise and carried off on a horse towards Quin. She was restored to her friends a week later. The abductors intended to make the girl, who was reputed to be possessed of some fortune, marry a pauper.

Appropriately, on July 9 sentence of death was passed with the proviso that it be commuted if they should leave the country.
