A couple of slight corrections to one of the marriage notices posted by Sharon above:

December 2, at Cratloe Church, by the Rev. M. O'Connor,
P.P., of Clare Abbey, Joseph P. CUFFE, Esq., eldest son of
Laurence Cuffe, Esq., of Alma-terrace, Monkstown, to Jane
O'Brien, third daughter of Augustine MORAN, Esq., of Willbrook,
county Clare.
Freeman's Journal 5 Dec 1865

This marriage notice has prompted me to do a little more research. Joseph and Jane have five children listed in the IGI.

The Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser (Dublin, Ireland), Saturday, December 15, 1888 reported Jane's death after just over 23 years of marriage:

CUFFE - Dec. 12, 1888, at 34 Elgin-road, Dublin, Jane O'Brien, dearly beloved wife of Joseph P Cuffe, Esq, J P. Funeral will leave above address on this, Saturday, morning at 9 o'clock for Glasnevin Cemetery.

The groom gets a mention or two in James Joyce's Ulysses, for Leopold Bloom was at one time `a clerk in the employment of Joseph Cuffe of 5 Smithfield for the superintendence of sales in the adjacent Dublin Cattle market on the North Circular road.'

The firm of Laurence Cuffe & Sons, cattle, corn & wool salesmen, is listed at 5 Smithfield in Thom's Directories of Dublin over many decades. As the business prospered, the Cuffes moved their residence first to Rathmines and later to Monkstown and other suburbs.

Another of Laurence Cuffe's children married a spouse from Clare within six months of Joseph's marriage:

Clare Freeman 22 May 1866
Patrick Frost Esq. of Castlebank, Co. Clare to Bedelia, 3rd daughter of Lawrence Cuffe Esq. Monkstown, Co. Dublin.

The Clare connection continued into the next generation:

In 1891, John H. de Courcy MacDonnell of Fairy Hill, Parteen married Eily O'Connell Fitzsimon, daughter of Henry O'Connell Fitzsimon and his wife Elizabeth Jane Cuffe. The Fitz-Simon (sic) pedigree is in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland (1958 ed., pp.288-290). The Fitzsimon/Cuffe marriage is in
The Morning Chronicle (London, England), Friday, June 11, 1858; Issue 28541:

MARRIAGES.
On the 8th inst., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rathmines, Henry O'Connell Fitzsimon, Esq., youngest son of the late Christopher Fitzsimon, Esq., of Glancullen, county Dublin, and grandson of Daniel O'Connell, to Elizabeth Jane, eldest daughter of Laurence Cuffe, Esq., of Rathmines.

I wonder did Laurence Cuffe have an earlier family connection in Clare, or did he just make a habit of introducing his children to potential spouses on cattle-buying trips to the county!

It should not be a surprise that Jane O'Brien Moran was named after her mother:

http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... /notes.htm has a tombstone inscription:

Inserted into the east gable, in south-east angle of the chancel of the old church of Noughaval, is a slab with the following inscription: ‘Here lies the bodies * of Augustine Moran * of Ballymahony * died the 3rd January 1848 * aged 98 years. * Of his wife Isabel Moran * died the 21st January 1856 * aged 94 years.* Of Augustine Moran of Willbrook * died 8th October 1869 * aged 70 years. * And of his wife Jane Moran * alias O'Brien * died 18th June 1849 * aged 51 years. * May they rest in peace.’

It would appear that Augustine Moran of Ballymahony was father of Augustine Moran of Willbrook, although it is always dangerous to draw such inferences without further evidence.

Paddy W.,

Thanks very much for ensuring that Cratloe Church is substituted for the "Cratice" that I saw on the imaged text. I remember wondering whether I should do something about that, but I had no reference to cite and many more items to
transcribe, so I left it in hopes that it might be clarified at some point.

I also appreciate the further background on the Cuffe family. I'll keep an eye out for something that might address the repeated intermarriages with Clare individuals in the mid to late 1800s. I have no background in Irish society of that time from a sociological perspective, but perhaps they were acting in line with the general trend to improve or solidify their social
standing. The Cuffes, being actively involved in the cattle business, were not so highly placed that the family would
not benefit from marrying into Clare families of long-standing higher status, and the Clare families perhaps found sufficient benefit from having a/another connection with the big-city panache of Dublin.

As it turns out, my reading up at the Allen County Library in Indiana included every issue of The Other Clare, including a
definitive account of the Cuffe family provided in Vol. 18 (1994) at p. 28, R.B. Hobson's article entitled Maurice Cuffe of
Ennis and His Family. The first Maurice Cuffe to be in Clare was a Somerset, England resident who was taxed on his
house in Ennis as of 1634. English port records preserved many years of his shipping goods (including wool, skin and hides to England and bringing fancy goods back to Ireland) indicating that he was a merchant. By the latter half of the 1600s
this family had stopped using any residence in England and had a first intermarriage with the O'Briens. There is mention of
Bunratty Barony and Quin. One of the younger generation, Joseph, took up residence in Kilkenny, became mayor, and had 20 children. The article stops with his death in 1679.

Thanks, Sharon. I will look up that Other Clare article when I get a chance.

I didn't realise when I posted the Cuffe information above that there was a triangle of marriages between Frosts, Morans and Cuffes:

On 23 Jan 1855, James Frost M.R.I.A., the famous Clare historian, married Bedelia Moran.

On 2 Dec 1865, Joseph Patrick Cuffe married Bedelia's sister Jane O'Brien Moran.

Finally, in May 1866, Patrick Frost, brother of James, married Bedelia Cuffe, sister of Joseph.

Hi Sharon

I have now read the Other Clare article and followed up some of the references to Ivar O'Brien's `O'Brien of Thomond'. (Maurice Cuffe's daughter Elizabeth m. 8 Feb 1652 Joseph Deane; their daughter Elizabeth Deane married as her second husband the widowed Sir Donough O'Brien, 1st Bt., of Dromoland. There is no Moran in Ivar O'Brien's index, and O'Donoghue's History of the O'Briens has no index, so I cannot place Jane O'Brien (d.1849) who married Augustine Moran and whose daughter married a Cuffe.)

There is a big gap from Joseph Cuffe's death in 1679 to Laurence Cuffe, who was having children by 1840.

I suppose we cannot rule out the possibility that the latter, a Catholic cattle dealer, was descended from the former, a Protestant aristocrat, whose descendants included the Earls of Desart.

Paddy,

Here's a bit more reading material to fill in the generations:
The genealogy of the existing British peerage By Edmund Lodge - Google book
p.140 takes the Kilkenny line to 1833

Description of (the second) Mrs. Maurice Cuffe's efforts in marrying off her 7 daughters,
including at least one to a Catholic gentleman:
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/show_narr ... ge_id=1478

Really complete description of the Cuffe family in Ireland"
The Peerage of Ireland By John Lodge, Mervyn Archdall - Google book
starts on p. 55 and describe the 7 sons of the first Maurice Cuffe; then on p. 61 describes the 7 daughters of the second Maurice Cuffe.

However, the really interesting result of this brief look into the Cuffe family is the article written by the first Maurice
Cuffe, who was a real Cromwellian, so no wonder that the family left Clare. Here he describes the nasty rebels of
Clare, by name, in detail:
Article by first Maurice Cuffe starts p. xv in
Narratives Illustrative of the Contests in Ireland in 1641 and 1690
By Thomas Crofton Croker, Royal Historical Society -- Google Book
also in "The Internet Archives" online collection, at:
http://www.archive.org/details/narrativ ... 00crokrich
p. 5 discusses theft of livestock from Gregory Hickman and George Colpis (Colpoys); also questioning of the Delohoyds; many mentions of McNamarows,
pp. 9-10 names who was in possession of specific Clare castles;
pp. 14-15 the names of the chief rebels of 1641 in Clare, with many O'Grady men

As to Catholic generations resulting from Protestant aristocrats, I offer my Donnellan family as an example. My family
chart, M. 467 (Genealogical Office, Dublin), starts with Nehemiah Donellan known as the (Protestant) Archbishop of Tuam (Galway) until his death in 1609, but his great grandson William (the first to reside in Clare) had a brother Teig who was a Catholic priest. Six generations later my East Clare parish records show the descendants as solidly Catholic and ripe for evictions of the mid-1800s because they did not all have the means to stay on their rented land. Yet, the Donnellan history also includes Anne Donnellan of Dublin, such a close friend of Mozart that she recieved a bequest upon his death.

Here are two Cuffe men who did convert in the mid-1800s:

p. 93 (printed page 71) Cuffe, Captain, of Connaught, Ireland.

p. 93 Cuffe, John Otway, of St. Albans, co. Kilkenny, and of Grange, Queen's County, Ireland; grandson of the last Earl of Harborough.

Another slight correction to this one:
Feb, 21, at the Church of the Catholic University, Morgan John O'CONNELL, Esq., of Ballylean
Lodge, county Clare, and the Temple, London, to Mary Anne, only surviving child of Charles
Bianconi, Esq, D.L., Longfield, county Tipperary. [This apparently is a cousin of The Liberator,
and the Bianconi family is also connected with the McMahons of Clare]
Freeman's Journal 22 Feb 1865
Morgan John O'Connell was a NEPHEW not a COUSIN of The Liberator.

Mary Anne Bianconi's brother Charles Bianconi Jr. was the first husband of Eily O'Connell Fitzsimon (1838-1919), granddaughter of The Liberator and aunt of the younger Eily O'Connell Fitzsimon (1869-1919) mentioned above. O'Connell Family Tracts by Basil O'Connell give the same year of death for both namesakes, aunt and niece.

I have posted more about the Bianconi family at http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=697
