Hi Sharon
In ref to the marriage of James Harris to a sister of Fr Michael Meehan parish priest of Kilrush, Fr Meehan had another sister married to James's brother and a direct descendant was the late film actor Richard Harris of Limerick and Kilkee. Fr Meehan shortly after that wedding became parish priest of Carrigaholt on the untimely death of the long serving PP Fr Malachi Duggan from cholera while ministering to his flock. The parish of Carrigaholt for almost 70yrs consisted of Moyarta and Kilballyowen parish's and reverted to seperate parish's after the death of Fr Michael Meehan in 1878. The two parish's make up the Loop Head Penninsula here in South West Clare or older name West Corca Baiscinn. Fr Meehan will be forever be associated with story of The Little Ark of Kilbaha (the date in the feature should read 1849 rather than '39) re in history section http://www.clarelibrary.ie. Fr Duggan was parish priest of Carrigaholt for more than 30yrs and after having been called to London to report on the conditions of the area in the 1820's (re eppi papers) he was ever known after as Fr Malachi 'Parliment' Duggan. He was constantly pleading with officials and campaigning for relief for his parishoners in those times. On another note you and Paddy casey have a lot to answer for since you first introduced the rest of us to, first the EPPI papers and now the gale collection no work is being done. I have put friends in touch with these sites and now they cross the street to avoid me in case I give them a new site to get locked into! Keep up the good work

Epidemiology of cholera in Clare

Post by Paddy Casey » Mon Apr 21, 2008 8:58 pm

Thank you for these kind words, Michael. Those databases are indeed dangerously addictive, aren't they ? Everything else gets neglected.

Can you put a year to the death of Fr.Duggan from cholera ? I'm trying to get an overview of the incidence and epidemiology of cholera in Clare. It's a kind of offshoot of a little effort to find out why 40 families died suddenly in one week in a little settlement called the ciseach on Moyrhee Commons, probably some time between 1847-49. I just discovered, for example, a report of the death of Anne, wife of Daniel Murray Esq., Inspector of Constabulary, at Corofin, from cholera in 1849. Corofin is very near the ciseach.

There must be a systematic source of epidemiological reports, e.g. county or PLU medical officers' returns, but I haven't yet located it.

Paddy

Hi Paddy,
Fr Duggan died 1849 but exact date I don't have it on me right now, i will find out. There was a widespread outbreak of cholera in the Kilrush Union 1848/49 as the effects of the famine continued in the Union right up to 1850. Plus the land clearences were on in the same years. In 1854 there is a report in the EPPI papers 1854- 1855 , Volume 16
1908 | Commissioners for Administering Laws for Relief of Poor in Ireland under Medical Charities Act: third annual report ,
of an outbrake of cholera in the Querrin area. I have yet to look up reports on the years 1848/49. I am not familiar with uploading data on to this forum as I have sent a post earlier and I dont think the attach is very clear. Key in Querrin on the EPPi search and on page 6 result 52 you will have the reports on that particular outbreak.
On the word 'ciseach' back here in south west clare it would refer to a temporary crossing of a drain or stream on the way in to a plot of turf bog
take care Michael

Re: Meehan-Harris, West Clare news items

Post by smcarberry » Mon Apr 21, 2008 11:32 pm

Michael,

Thanks very much for the background info on the Harris-Meehan news item. I had no idea that Richard Harris had any
connection to Clare. Several years ago I watched his powerful performance in "The Field" filmed in Cong, Mayo.

I suppose that I should mention that my Carberry family's connection to a Meehan family was the marriage of Eliza Carberry to Patrick Meehan, although that was in the Parish of O'Callaghan Mills in East Clare, while both were living on a townland called
Lakyle just north of Kilkishen, same townland on which my family's Patrick Carberry was living in 1850. By 1870 these Meehans, both age 45, were living in Illinois with 15-year-old daughter Catherine born in New York, and then in 1900 only Eliza is living with her apparent brother Peter Carberry before her death in 1904.

I also have been tracking a John Meehan family of Wisconsin, after finding an obituary on this Gale database. I'll post that soon.
