John Flanagan, born 1823

Post by AFlanagan » Thu Nov 04, 2010 12:45 pm

I am looking for more information on the family of John Flanagan. He was born 28 May 1823 in County Clare. He arrived in America in 1847, possibly going through Canada. He married in New York in 1851.
He may have had a brother named Patrick who was born in 1820 and immigrated to America as well. His father was also named John and his mother was Ellen.

Do you have a clue - any clue at all - as to the place in Clare where he was born or lived. The fact that you have a precise date of birth suggests that you have got unusually precise (for that era) information from someone.

Please try to give us some more clues so as to raise the chances of finding a lead.

Thanks.

Paddy

I wish I could narrow it down a bit. His gravestone has his birth date and County Clare on it. I haven't been able to track down any family who knows where within County Clare he was born.

This is difficult, of course, because Clare was crawling with Flanagans (and variant spellings of the name). However, interestingly, there were two Ellen Flanagans listed in the Griffith's Valuation of ca. 1855, one in Rinecaha and the other in Kilkerin (see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... fithf2.htm ). It could be that her husband John Flanagan died before 1855 and she took over the land.

Other people in this forum who are familiar with searching US records might be able to help you digging up some more clues from the US end.

Thank you. I have quite a bit of information about him once he came to America. The 1900 census indicates that he immigrated in 1847 and was married in 1851.
That could very well be John's mother Ellen living there after her husband, John's, death. Do any of the records indicate birth year? It would help to be able to rule out some of the people on the list.

I forgot to mention that I checked the Tubber (Kilkeedy) baptisms for you (see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... s_name.htm ) but the only female related to a Flanagan there had the maiden name Margaret Dowd.

The other Ellen Flanagan was in Kilkerin in the parish of Killofin in 1855. Now, the 1834 Tithe Applotment records of the parish of Killofin list a John Flanagan in Millpark, a placename which does not appear in the subsequent records so I don't know exactly where it was in the parish or, more specifically, whether it was co-located with Kilkerin. Again, someone else on this forum might know where Millpark was. It is just possible that these were the John and Ellen Flanagan you are looking for but this is pretty conjectural with this limited information.

Paddy

P.S. I did check for the placename Millpark in the parish of Killofin at http://www.logainm.ie but there is no such entry for County Clare. I sent them a message asking whether they had any further information. Watch this space. P.

The following information has been supplied by Sean McGlinchey of http://www.logainm.ie:

Though Millpark is listed as a townland in the County Clare Tithe Applotment Book of 1834 it was not listed as a townland during the Ordnance Survey mapping of the area; hence its absence from maps. However, the name is still in use locally, as we have been informed by the local post office, and should one search the OSI mapviewer, by county, and locality, (historic 25" map) one is brought to the townland of Knockphutteen, where a 'Hill Park' is marked (it is not clear whether this is an error for Mill Park! Be that as it may, as stated the name is known and used locally in the environs of Labasheeda, which is of course near Knockphutteen.

Map snippet of Knockphutteen attached below.

So your next steps are browse that map at http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,512804,651819,6 and http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... B252%2B144 , talk to the people at the Post Office and go to Labasheeda and walk the sod.

Based on a few other family trees I found on Ancestry.com, I have two new possibilities for John's mother, Ellen's, maiden name: Hayes and O'Dea. It's entirely possible that neither are correct. Oh my, how I wish I could travel to Ireland to dig into this there!

I found here: htthttp://books.google.com/books?id=wqzRAA ... in&f=false a reference to Millpark. It mentions a chalybeate spring. Does that help anyone locate Millpark?

I have been researching a Malone family whose address is given on birth and marriage records as Millpark up to 1895 and I have found them in Kilkerin townland in the censuses of 1901 and 1911. While they could have moved between 1895 and 1901, I think it is more likely that Millpark is a local name for part of Kilkerin.

I was born in Labasheeda and as Paddy has suggested Millpark is a local name for part of the townland of Kilkerin
