Clare voters of 1836, names, locations

Post by smcarberry » Sat Sep 25, 2010 3:57 pm

Volume 43 of the British Parliamentary Papers, online as a Google book, has information for the year 1835, as reported in 1836. Here is the link:
http://books.google.com/books?id=41USAA ... re&f=false

At page 64, there is a short list (shown below) of Clare men holding the right to vote by reason of their holding land to which a "rent charge" applied. This is a new term for me, as I am familiar with mortgages and rentals but not with a binding commitment to pay an annual monetary amount for land to a person retaining no legal interest in the land. Here is a definition:
"A rentcharge is an annual sum paid by the owner of freehold land to a person who has no other legal interest in the land..."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rent_charge

The longer list is a collection (entitled magistrates and barristers (lawyers) of familiar names and places for gentry in Clare, although this also lists non-resident men having the right to vote in Clare elections, as well as Protestant clergymen. The types of electors are described on p. 96 as being either freeholders (further divided into 50-pound or 10-pound groups) or leaseholders, with one further category in Ennis being that of burgess. On p. 51?, there are statistics as to how many electors there were in 1835 and now many had voted.

The screenshots below, pp. 8-9, are the electors in Clare as of 31 Dec 1835 (thus eligible to vote in 1836). In the Queens County section on p. 107, there is also a Clare man listed: Timothy O'Brien of Killishey, Co. Clare. In this same book there are similar lists on p; 19 for Co. Galway and p. 30 for Co. Limerick. Due to the number of images involved, I will be using a reply posting to show the final images.

In House of Lords vol. 29 (the same volume number in which a Tulla voters list of 1840 appeared in an earlier posting on this Forum), there appears on p. 422 a list of voters in SW Clare eligible by reason of holding property worth 10 pounds. The specific area is labeled Killeely in Limerick Union, and the time period extends from 1832 to 1840. These names have not appeared on the other voters lists in my postings. This is the link:

This volume has a search engine, which doesn't return any other Clare voters in other jurisdictions, except for this one:
Gort [Galway] Union ... John Foster, Kilkeady, p. 202

I can't show the entire title page of this volume, but below is a screenshot of part of it.
