Logans in Clare

Post by ftipple » Tue Aug 17, 2010 5:57 pm

I am attempting to trace the family of James Logan, born about 1819 in Co. Clare, and his wife Margaret McMahon, born about 1825, also in Co. Clare. They emigrated to Manchester probably in the 1840s, and at least 6 children were born there: Ellen (1848), Mary (1850), John (1852), Michael (abt 1856), Margaret (1857) and Honora/Nora (1860); several, possibly all, of the children were baptised in St Wilfred's church in Hulme. I have traced the family in the 1861 English census where James's occupation is given as "chandler's labourer" and Mary's as "hawker"; the evidence for their dates and places of birth also come from the census. Evidence from Margaret junior's marriage certificate indicates that James died before 1877.

I know that Logan is an uncommon names in Clare, and I have found no Logans recorded in the county in either Griffith, or in the Tithe Applotment Books. Has anyone any information about any Logans in Clare in the 19th century, or earlier?

All advice, comments gratefully received!

The Clare Library site has a number of Logans (2 Georges and 2 Johns) recorded in the Griffith's Valuation at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... fithl2.htm

Thanks for drawing my attention to these Logan entries - don't know how I missed them!
