Delegates to the Clare Convention in Ennis (November 1885)

Because much of the 19th century Irish census data was destroyed or lost family historians often have to rely on surrogate datasets to find their ancestors.

The attached cutting from the Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser (Dublin, Ireland), Tuesday, November 10, 1885 lists the delegates to the Clare Convention in Ennis. The list does not show the exact addresses (e.g. townlands) of the delegates but it does give their localities. First names are, in many cases, limited to initials. Nevertheless the list offers clues as to the existences of individuals in those Clare localities in 1880.

Of course, the cutting also reports addresses and motions which give insight into some of the local and national political concerns of the time.

Some of the entries are a little difficult to read - this is a scan of a 19th century newspaper, for goodness sakes - but the task can be lightened by use of the Virtual Magnifying Glass (a free little software tool that can be downloaded from http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/ ).

I made this transcription of the names mentioned in the report:

Delegates of the Clare Convention in Ennis (November 1885)

The Clare Convention
Selection of Candidates.
Speeches of Mr. Healy, M.P., and Mr. O’Brien, M.P.
(Telegram from our Reporter) Ennis, Monday Night.
To-day the Clare Convention was held at Ennis. The proceedings created a great deal of interest. The result has been to emphasise the unanimity which has characterised the meetings of the kind that have been held up to the present. The selection unanimously by the Convention of Mr. Jeremiah Jordan, of Enniskillen, and of Mr. Joseph Cox, Secretary to the Lord Mayor of Dublin, marks a feature of the hour, and in the case of the former gentleman, a Protestant, and a Northern, proves beyond question the spirit which actuates the people in chosing true and sterling men.
Mr. Wm O’Brien, M.P.; Mr. T.M. Healy, M.P.; Mr. James O’Kelly, M.P.; Mr. Jordan, and Mr. Cox arrived here by the morning train from Limerick, and were received with the most unbounded enthusiasm.
