Cholera in Clare (and elsewhere) in 1832

Post by Paddy Casey » Wed Apr 02, 2008 9:06 pm

Cholera epidemics occurred frequently in the early 19th century. Attached is a report from The Aberdeen Journal (Aberdeen, Scotland), Wednesday, July 11, 1832 listing a number of places in Clare which were affected. Note the 104 cases and 28 deaths among the military at Clare Castle, for example.

This disease, added to the widespread agrarian violence and poverty and hunger in the county made the life of our ancestors very hard.
