'48 Movement Lynch family, Belvoir Model Agricultural School

Post by David_Lynch » Wed Jun 16, 2010 6:38 pm

My great-grandfather was John Lynch, a teacher at the Model Agricultural School in Belvoir Clare. One of his granddaughters wrote, probably, in 1956:
The Lynch family hailed from County Clare, and his [the writer's brother] Grandfather, John Lynch, was born in Ennis. For taking some part in the '48 movement he was removed from his school in that County to the newly built Model Agricultural School in Co. Kilkenny in 1850.
Does anyone have any further details about the school, the '48 movement in Clare and the Lynch family, please?

While I have been unaware of an agricultural school in Kilkenny, I have seen repeated references to the one in Belvoir, Clare. The problem is that I do not have my saved materials organized so that I can readily find materials relating to the school. My memory tells me that the Wilson family was associated with it, which seems borne out by what Google Books has online regarding the Belvoir agricultural school (Google Books can be accessed from the main Google page, using the links in the upper lefthand corner and going to "More"). There you can see what is online by using the key phrase "agricultural school" +belvoir +wilson. The Wilson involved in 1859 was David, as the school's patron.

I have not kept a file of Lynch materials because my own Kilkishen families were not involved with the Lynch family so far as I know. If I can find another bit of saved material bearing on the Belvoir school, I will post about it here.

I will also see what I might find out about your Lynch connection to Connecticut, as I am a former Connecticut resident and am familiar with some online resources for the state.

"A new school-house has lately been erected at Belvoir, to which is attached a model farm ; the cost of the building was £190, of which £76 was paid by D. Wilson, Esq., and the remainder by the National Board." From County Clare: A History and Topography 1837 by Samuel Lewis

There is an article by Diarmaid Ó Donnabháin in The Other Clare, Vol XI (1987) entitled "Belvoir Model Agricultural School (1835-1866)". There's a list of the contents of The Other Clare at http://www.xs4all.nl/~tbreen/Journals/Clare.html. You may be able to obtain a copy of the 1987 edition by contacting the society Secretary (Peter Wise) at peter.wise.ie@gmail.com. (According to http://www.xs4all.nl/~tbreen/journals.html )

Many thanks. By using this hint, I have found a letter from John Lynch and several references to him when he was teaching at Woodstock Farm, Inistioge, Kilkenny. My great grandmother also taught there and I think I can see two or three references to teachers at other schools who are related by marriage.

Thanks. His daughter Susan M Lynch was born in Connecticut in November 1891.

My Ggrandfather, Lawrence Russell, born 1862 came to the US 1880. His mother was a Lynch from County Clare, but I have no first names and have been unable to find information. I know the Russells were farmers, store keepers (Kilkee and Kilrush) and one was a doctor in Kilrush. Have you, in your search, found any Lynch/Russell connections?

Have a great day,
Kathy
