Historical maps of County Clare - new online browser system

Post by Paddy Casey » Tue Apr 27, 2010 6:43 pm

I see that the Clare County Library has just set up a new and very elegant online map browser system at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/maps/index.htm

Its use of Flash technology obviates the need for special browser plugins. The new system is compatible with Firefox and several other commonly used browsers. I find this a great advantage because I was constantly having to switch over to the MS Explorer browser to use the maps.

Now, with a couple of mouseclicks and a few keystrokes one can find any Clare town or townland on, for example, the 1842 OS maps.

A particularly neat feature is a little sub-window called Search/Overview which hovers over the main map. It shows the whole County and a little red circle which shows you which bit of the County map you are looking at in the main window. In Search/Overview you can specify which bit of the County you want to look at and it takes you there instantly.
