William John Ryan, Scariff

Post by sarah » Mon Mar 29, 2010 9:58 pm

I have recently found out that my great grandfather William John Ryan was born in Scariff c1867/8. His fathers name was John ( he was a labourer). I was lucky enough to find Williams army records, but it doesnt give an address of where he was living, it just says he was born in Scariff. William joined the army in 1887 at the age of 19 1/2. Please can anyone advise as to where I might find or apply for Williams birth record? I have tried various websites but havent had any luck so far.I dont know his mothers name or if he had any siblings. I am at a loss as to where to look next to enable me to trace more of the Ryan family.
Thank you

Sarah,

For genealogy, GenWeb is a wonderful resource, and there is a GenWeb for counties in Ireland as well as the U.S. You can find a GenWeb site for any county by using a search engine such as Google and a search term such as "Genweb + (name of the county)" On the one for Co. Clare, you can find how to contact the General Register Office of Ireland for mail-in applications to obtain birth certificates, described on this webpage:
http://www.groireland.ie/about_us.htm

To get the best results with a certificate application, consulting the Pilot Search feature of the FamilySearch.org website is recommended. To see birth record listings for William born about 1868, use this link and use only Clare, Ireland for the location:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsea ... html#start

You will see that there are two birth records in 1870 filed in the Scarriff Registration District for boys named William Ryan and you will see the exact references to use when ordering those records.

You may also want to use the Clare County Library's 1901 census to see your William's possible remaining family members, assuming that the town of Scarriff is where they resided. There is a 50-year-old widow Mary Ryan living with her son John there.
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... 136_15.htm
They are still in the same household in the 1911 census, which is on this site:

Hope your efforts bring good results,

Sarah

If you search at
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/ ... _form=true
for William Ryan with father John Ryan born in British Isles/Ireland/Clare, you will find four possibilities between 1867 and 1873. Unfortunately, no fewer than three of the four have mother's first name Mary, matching Sharon's census find.

If you then search for unnamed children with father John Ryan and mother Mary born in Clare, you will find potential siblings of these three Williams. None of these have addresses which are obviously in the Scarriff area. Nevertheless, you may pick up some clues to help you identify your William Ryan and his parents.

For more guidelines on using the familysearch.org website to research Irish ancestors, see http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~pwaldron/gilbert/

Thank you both for your replies.
I will search the websites you have suggested and keep my fingers crossed that I find William.
I have never been to Ireland and Im not sure if Scariff is a big town, or if there are/were many Ryan families living there. It would be lovely to be able to trace the Irish side of my family, although I think its going to take rather a long time!

Thank you both once again.

Sarah,
there are a number of Ryans in Scariff with telephones, according to eircom's online phonebook http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/search/Clare/Ryan.html.
The population of Scariff in 2006 (the latest census figures) was 798 (http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... p_size.htm).
You can get some idea of the size of Scariff from Google Maps. Just go to http://maps.google.com/ and enter 'scariff, clare' and zoom in. Be sure to click on the 'Satellite' option - Scariff is one of the areas in Clare covered in detail by these maps.
And here are a few photos of Scariff from Flickr:

and one from picasaweb:

All the best,
