Griott(e) or Greo of Ballymorris and Brickhill, co. Clare

I just learned of the 1882 marriage of Margaret Frost and Francis Griott and decided to do a very quick and rough one name study of a rare Clare surname which seems to have become extinct by the mid 20th century. Here's a quick summary of a couple of hours work. The pedigree is speculative in places and should be confirmed by ordering photocopies of the relevant certificates. Different generations below are distinguished by indenting with the appropriate number of dashes.

The Griott name, once common in Kilfintinan parish in co. Clare, appears to have died out.

In Griffith's Valuation, John Griott was living in Ballymorris and Francis Griott in Brickhill West. The only other Griott in Ireland, Daniel F. Griott, B.L., A.M. (T.C.D.), listed in Cork, may not have been related.

Francis Griott in the TABs was probably father of Tho's Griott, with whom he shared land.

Thomas Griott of Ballymorris had children baptised in Cratloe between 1827 and 1836; his widow Mary née Ryan remarried in Canada in 1838; see http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12564258 ... -230870789

Francis was probably father and Thomas probably brother of:

John Griott of Ballymorris (John Griott d. 1881 Q4 Limerick aged 76) who m. (wife died bef 1880, prob. bef. civil registration in 1864) and had two children:

- James, b. Abt 1840/4 (58 in 1901; 70 in 1911; d. 1929 Q3, Scarriff Union, aged 85); only son; m. 1873 Kilrush union v.4 p.393 Maria Brew/Breuer/Blew (d. 1898 Q3 aged 52, Ennis union) and had issue:

On 26 Apr 1911, Mary Griott, aged 35, 5'2" tall, daughter of James Griott of Ballymorris, sailed from Queenstown on S.S.Caronia, arriving on 4 May 1911, to her cousin, Bridget Carmody, at 694, 10th Ave, NY; Mary does not appear under her maiden name in the 1920 or 1930 U.S. censuses. She declared her intention to become naturalized between 1917 and 1927 in U.S. District Court, Southern Dist. of New York, M1675

Abt 1844/56, only daughter; 34 in 1880 when she was awarded a thousand pounds damages after taking a breach of promise case against Robert Ryan of Ballymorris, which was reported in The Irish Times; 45 in 1901; 66 in 1911; m. 1893 Q3 v.5 p.218 Limerick to John Griffin, marriage lasted 12 years; he was 40 in 1901; dead by 1911, presumably d. Abt 1905.

Robert Ryan was aged 39 at the time of the breach of promise case and `the only son of a comfortable and wealthy farmer, who holds some hundreds of acres, and has house property besides in the City of Limerick.'

It was described in a later article as former residence of the French Griotte family, tenant farmers.


GRIOTT of Brickhill

Francis GRIOTT of Brickhill west (in Griffith) was surely father of both:
- Mary Jane Griott, presentation nun, d. 1928 Q3 aged 73 in Dublin
and
- Francis (jr?) of Brickhill m. 21 Feb 1882 as her first husband Margaret Frost of Drumline; he d. 1885 and she remarried 1888. She was dau. of Patrick Frost and Maria Killeen.

Griott children born from late 1882 on could have been either Margaret Frost's or Maria Brew's children; any Frost grandchildren were more likely to be called Patrick or Francis, so these are more likely to be further Brew grandchildren:

Thomas Greo (55 in 1911) had married an American before returning to Ireland.

There is no evidence as to whether the Limerick Greo family were related to the Cratloe Griott family.

Hello all
Let me introduce my wife Kathy, who has not been able to break through this
particular brick wall in spite of years of trying. Her father, Thomas
James RYAN (1908-1992) was the son of James Patrick RYAN, a tailor born in
Cork, but who moved to live in Limerick, married there (1905-08 ?) to Agnes
Mary de GRIOTTE , and died Aug 1948 in the city. They lived near St. John's
Castle.
Tom could never remember his grandfather.
Agnes' mother Mary rented a cottage on the banks of the Shannon. Owned
(unbeknown to her) by IRA sympathiser; burnt down by Black & Tans during
Troubles. Another source said their house on Clare St. called Griottville
was bought after move from New York.
Mary, we are told, went to live with the Ryans until her death in Sept.
1933.

Anyone with similar interests, or who can shed any light at all on the
family, please get in touch. We'd be especially grateful if anyone could
help with a census look-up.
