Inchiquin estate tenants of mid-1800s named

Post by smcarberry » Thu Feb 25, 2010 3:17 pm

A prior posting mentioned this resource:
Mss 14435 - 1443 Inchiquin Papers, listing major tenants of Sir Edward O'Brien in the Barony of Bunratty, 1734 - 45

A Google book has an additional reference to an Inchiquin manuscript in which names of tenants appear, in the mid-1800s. On p. 126 of this work the author states that in 1861 this involved 500 tenants on an estate of 20,000 acres.

Landlords and tenants in mid-Victorian Ireland
by William Edward Vaughan, 1994
"a comprehensive and wide-ranging analysis of relations between landlords and tenants in Ireland in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. W.E. Vaughan explores evictions, rents, tenants' rights, estate management, and tenants' resistance to landlords. In place of the conventional image of predatory and all-powerful landlords, and oppressed, impoverished tenants, the author presents a scholarly and nuanced picture of mutual accommodation, thus revising the traditional view of land relations in nineteenth-century Ireland."

I have also found these manuscripts listed on the NLI Sources website:

Rent arrears book of Co. Clare tenants of Lucius O'Brien, 13th Baron Inchiquin, 1849-1850, with list of tenants under notice to quit, 1851
Inchiquin Papers, Mss. 14740-14741 NLI

An account of money received from tenants (of Sir Lucius O'Brien, 13th Baron Inchiquin?) for the poor rates, 1846
Inchiquin Papers, Ms. 14739

Accounts of money received from tenants in Co. Clare of Edward O'Brien, 14th Baron Inchiquin, 1892 - 1895
Inchiquin Papers, Mss. 14710 - 14711

Other manuscripts exist that are limited to a particular Clare location, such as:
Rent books of thirty eight tenants of Lord Inchiquin in the town of Clare, 1861 - 1872. In alphabetical order.
Inchiquin Papers, Mss. 14662-14659

Rent book of Thomas Neylon, of Dromoland, tenant of Lord Inchiquin, 1861-1866 Inchiquin Papers, Ms. 14660

Rent books of John Carrigg, Margaret Clancy and Anne Cuddihy, of Ayleacotty, tenants of Lord Inchiquin, 1861 - 1868
Inchiquin Papers, Mss. 14662-14664

Still other manuscripts can be reached by using the search term "Inchiquin tenants" and those provide details of cash
accounts with tenants, not specifically stated to be involving rent.

This is the link to a very detailed description of the Inchiquin Papers in the National Library (Dublin), assembled in 2009 by Brian Kirby. Not only is there a search engine (100% reliable in producing results, as the whole document is typed, not involved with OCR), but also Mr. Kirby's nutshell descriptions for each manuscript provide individuals' names and placenames (remember to try several spelling variations). The breadth of time involved with these manuscripts is from the 1600s forward in time.

Looking forward to someone reaching these manuscripts, especially ones like in the screenshots below.
