At http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtop ... f=1&t=1695 Miriam Scahill and Paddy Waldron refer to a watchmaker in Kilkee called Dold. That thread referred to the watchmaker Maurer in Ennis.
I see that in 2006 in the Iris Oifiguil Donal Dold, watch wholesaler of Tullamore, Co.Offaly, was listed as failing to lodge an income tax return.
In a list of British & Irish clock and watch makers (c1600-c1940) at http://www.clockswatches.com/showindex.php?em=D&page=2 numerous Dolds are listed.
Dold & Sons, founded 1842, were clockmakers in the Black Forest in Germany (see http://ecodeltempo.altervista.org/modul ... w&rid=9037 ).
Seems there was quite a Dold clockmaking disapora.

Re: P. Dold, watchmaker, of Kilkee
There is an obituary of Peter Dold in the "Clare Champion" of 27 March 1943. Peter Dold (1858 - 1943) carried on a watch-making and jewellery business in Kilrush from 1882. The Kilrush Dolds were connected by marriage to the Weedle family of Mallow, Co. Cork according to the 1943 obituary.

There is the following reference to this family in the "Christian Brothers, Kilrush, Souvenir of the Golden Jubilee 1874 - 1924" book (1924).
"Peter Dold, junior, with his brothers, Joseph and Francis attended the schools for many years. Peter and Francis conduct a successful jewellry business in Kilrush. Joseph died in an internment camp during the European war".
This short paragraph is in a section on 'Our Past Pupils'.

Turtle Bunbury, in his account of Crotty's Pub in Kilrush at
http://www.turtlebunbury.com/published/ ... ottys.html
notes that "An antique Dold kit-clock resounds from behind the bar."
It is impossible to tell from Turtle's reference to the "antique Dold kit-clock" whether he knows that there were firms of that name both in Kilrush and in the Black Forest, and that many of his readers (me included) wont know which he is referring to.
This has all been discussed in the Kilrush Local History Group at

where Paddy O'Shea recalled his memories of a transaction with Dolds in Kilrush:
On a side issue Dold's Jewellers is mentioned. On my first home leave from Africa I left my watch for repairs and paid ten shillings. After a year or so I wrote him a letter in Irish. Still no reply.... After another 4 yrs I called again. "Ah yes" he said "it's still in there now" and in amongst the multitudes and without help from me, he brandished the fugitive. "How much?" I asked. "Sure you paid for it when you brought it", he said nonchalantly.
