Sixmilebridge Baptisms and Marriages - in stages

Post by Sduddy » Wed Feb 06, 2019 3:33 pm

Here is my transcription of Sixmilebridge baptisms 1828-1839: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up

I've taken the liberty of translating (from Latin) the first names of the parents and sponsors, but I've left the first names of the children in Latin so that locating the original entry is not made more difficult.
An unusual feature of these baptisms is that sometimes the name of the priest performing the baptism is given first, so extra care is needed when checking the original.

Please let me know of mistakes, so that I can mend them.

Sheila

I edited the attachment when I realised that I had made an error in sorting the data.

Sheila, as you know, you have already earned your place in the Transcriber Hall of Fame based on sheer quantity of your output. What others may not realize is how important it is to state the limitations that might affect accuracy of the transcription, which you are also doing with candor and astuteness. This has been a parish for which I have been awaiting such an effort, long promised by someone else who signed up to do it. So, another thank you for stepping forward to take up the slack; it is certainly timely. We now have the best possible transcription.

BTW, I did dive into this parish's records already and found the 1838 baptism for a Stephen Daly, who immigrated with his parents and younger brothers to New York City. I first happened across Stephen's obituary and then backtracked to the Sixmilebridge parish, which was called Killmurry parish in the 1870 obit. As you may recall, I am looking for a Michael Daly b.c. 1816 (from a Quin-Clooney parish record that you transcribed, thus giving me another Carberry for my family) but Stephen's father Michael was b.c. 1801, thus not a candidate.

Just for a chuckle and to emphasize how difficult some of these names are to read, the 1870 NYC census listing for the Michael Daley family shows the wife Honora (nee Lyons) as "Hannover." Obviously not an Irish-descended censustaker in that area that year.

Ever grateful,
Sharon C.

Thanks Sharon.

Here is my transcription of Sixmilebridge marriages 1829-1839: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up

When the name "Joanne" appears among the witnesses, I've found it impossible to decide whether it's male or female. The witnesses are given in the dative case, I reckon, but the smattering of Latin I learned long long ago is very rusty now. All I can say is that the chances of "Joanne" being Joannes (John) are far higher than the chances of it being Joanna.

I found it impossible to distinguish between Regan and Ryan. It's important to take this into account when researching either of those names. There are other mistakes as well, of course.

Sheila

P.S. I edited this transcription when I found that 7 baptisms had been entered by mistake in the register of marriages 1840 - 1864. Three of those baptisms had been entered also in the register of baptisms, but 4 had not. I've now inserted those 4 baptisms in my transcription - they are in red.

I found 7 baptisms which had been entered by mistake in the marriage register. Three had been entered also in the baptism register. The other four I have added in to my transcription of the baptism register - those entries are in red.

These baptisms can be checked against the civil records of births: http://www.irishgenealogy.ie (look under Ennis), but I haven’t done that.

This register of marriages is in very clear handwriting - I think it is a transcription of the original register.

These marriages can be checked against the civil records of marriages: http://www.irishgenealogy.ie, but I haven’t done that.
