This isn't a specifically Clare item but those doing research on Clare Past topics might be interested to know that Fiontar (DCU) and The Placenames Branch (Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs) have created a database of Ireland’s placenames. Work commenced on the first phase of the project in April 2007 and the Placenames Database of Ireland was launched at the beginning of October 2008. You can find it at http://www.logainm.ie/
There is, of course, already masses of information on Clare placenames on the Clare Library website sliced and diced in various ways (just fire up the Search facility at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/search.html and type in "Placenames"). This new Placenames Database of Ireland is another slant on the topic.

Re: Placenames Database of Ireland
Paddy,
Thanks for the other advice you sent me.
I noticed when looking at the 1901 census information for Doherty there were Casey's at Sixmilebridge in the same parish.
I note form your other posts that you are interested in that area.
If these Doherty's are my ancestors presumably they might have known yours.
Regards,
Dave Roberts

Caseys at Sixmilebridge
Dave,
Thanks for flagging this.
I haven't looked into the Caseys of Sixmilebridge (yet). Hitherto I've concentrated on the clusters of Caseys along a line roughly between Gort and Ruan and have established a number of tentative or definite relationships between those families and other families in the same area (e.g. the Howards of Tubber/Moyrhee).

Re: Placenames Database of Ireland
Thanks for that link Paddy. I've put links to the English and Irish language versions of the placenames database on our (Clare) Places and Placenames page. This page is one of the main points of entry for the whole website - http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/places.htm
