Griffith's Valuation: interpreting the tables
The following is not specifically a Clare posting but if it helps someone augment the body of knowledge of our Clare ancestry then it's all to the good. The article "Is There More in Griffith's Valuation Than Just Names?" by James R. Reilly, CGRS, has been published at various places on the Web. I'm...

Re: DOODY FAMILY in Co Clare
Hi Cathy, I'd definitely take look at those parish registers even if they are reputed to be illegible. They may possibly include legible sponsors' names which allow pinpointing of localities or the names of parish priest which may allow bracketing of dates. I got a lot of information on my family by...

Yep, the Smileys are working. Which reminds me of something I just read: extensive scientific research has shown that 98.0673% of smile(y)s are caused by other smile(y)s.

Re: DOODY FAMILY in Co Clare
Cathy, Please let us know whether you have fully searched the Clare County Library website at http://www.clarelibrary.ie and found, for example, the Doodys in Clondagad (note spelling) in the tithe applotments (1826) and the Griffiths Valuation (ca. 1855) and the many Doodys in other parts of Clare ...

Re: MARY WALSH & PARENTS OF KILKEE
Hi Julie, The Clare County Library servers are being reorganised at the moment (see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/opac_temp.htm ) and from time to time during the last few days the website has been out of service for short periods. As I write, it is up and running. So if you go to http://www.clarelibra...

Re: MARY WALSH & PARENTS OF KILKEE
A few approaches here, Julie: Firstly, fire up the Clare County Library website search facility at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/search.html and, using the Search For field rather than the Google engine, enter "walsh and kilkee and tithes" and take a look at the list of people who were "tithe applotted...

"Irish Names of Places" by P.W. Joyce: Clare references
A posting in the Irish Placenames Yahoo group just flagged an amazing cornucopia of copyright-free information called The Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org ) which must have been around for ages but is a new discovery for me. Specifically, it provides links to the three weighty downloadable v...

Carrolls in Kilcorkan, Kilkeedy 1901
Mary Ellen, You ask about Kilcorkan cemeteries. It is difficult to answer your question briefly and accurately. I am writing the following in the assumption that you are not familiar with the area. Please excuse me and disregard the following if you are. There are numerous graveyards scattered aroun...

Re: Carrolls in Kilcorkan, Kilkeedy 1901
Are there any Carrolls still living in this area? Check out the Eircom telephone directory at http://www.eircom.ie. If you enter "Carroll" and "Clare", for example, you will find numerous present-day Carrolls listed in Clare. At least 3 of them are in the immediate vicinity of Kilcorkan and one (Car...
