Re: Sisters of Mercy, Ennis ~ School Records
I regret to report that there are no student records in the Mercy Archives. :( But, in my further research, I did learn a lot about Mercy's progressive approach to 19th century female education in Ireland. Based on what I discovered in newspaper archives, I took a leap and believe my relatives went ...

Sisters of Mercy, Ennis ~ School Records
Before I unnecessarily bother the Sister Archivist, does anyone know if there are student records in the Archives of the Sisters of Mercy at Ennis? I'm wondering if my great grandmother attended their school..... I think she might have been educated ..... three of her brothers were college graduates...

Knocknakilla Cillin, Ballyea South near Ennistymon
It seems like the website of the Clare Archeological Society might be offline right now but I have a question about this picture from one of their outings in 2014. They called this site/graveyard: "Knocknakilla Cillin" As you can see from the second photo, this is the crypt of my great great grandmo...

Just Returned from Ireland - A Semi-Report
My husband and I have just returned from a two week trip to Ireland. After years of research, it was so satisfying to finally visit the places I'd only read about. I've only located the graves of two relatives and we went to see them both. My great great grandmother is buried in a crypt in a small g...

Re: Archived Law Records
Thank you for your reply! I am so annoyed with myself! Several years ago, I had come across information about property that had been managed for my grandfather (who had emigrated to America in 1908). The Law Office was in Ennis. On a whim, I did contact that office - explaining my genealogical reaso...

Re: Holy wells of County Clare
My great grandfather was born at Moher Lodge in 1838. We will be there next week! I've been told that there is a Holy Well near the Lodge which is named St Brigid's Well. Visiting it is on my list. Does anyone know anything about this Well? What should I look for while visiting? Should I bring somet...

Archived Law Records
My great grandfather was a solicitor with an office in Dublin and another office in Ennistymon. My current project is in creating a "whole" picture of him....... He died in 1894 (56 years old). Does anyone know what would have happened to his records? Would they have been archived somewhere? If foun...

Re: Ennis Lunatic Asylum
Just wanted to leave an update for this post of mine. After submitting a FOI (Freedom of Information) form, ALL of the records found for my ancestors were copied and sent to me! I am pleasantly shocked at what was included...... It was a very productive day when they were delivered! A "shout out" to...

Re: The McMahon Archival Collection of Landed Estates in Cla
Just wanted to post an update on this post of mine. Ms Rene Franklyn was SO very helpful! She uploaded my grandfather's records to a CD for us and even facilitated my FOI form to access other records. She has ignored my requests about compensating her office for their patient assistance .... I even ...

Re: 19th C Illnesses~Marasmus (of the Brain)~Mental Retardat
Yes, Paddy, I agree ..... At the time, the family was quite well-off..... But ~ what about alcoholism? If he had been a HUGE alcoholic, perhaps they called it: marasmus of the brain instead of alcoholism? But, then, that really does not explain why his father had by-passed him when he was young .......

Help Interpreting Registry of Deeds Entry, Please
Hi! I found this entry for my great grandfather in the Registry of Deeds but I have no idea how to interpret it. Can you help me? His entry is marked with the orange stars...... it is dated 24 August 1895 & he had died in September 1894. Do the initials "WD" have something to do with "widow"? What d...
