Re: O'Regan sixmilebridge and or Labasheeda

There was a James O'Regan here in Sixmilebridge in the first & second decades of the 1900s and co-incidentally (as PaddyW has pointed out), he was married to a Nora Ryan. However, I doubt that he was in the RIC and for 3 reasons. 1) He was a successful business man and politican during this period, ...

Re: Family Pews

An amusing anecdote about pews, told to me by Mildred Ievers (now deceased) of Mount Ievers. In the Kilfinaghty parish church (Cof I) in Sixmilebridge, box pews were allocated by the parish vestry. The vestry decided on the basis of the size of the contribution a family gave to the church. The resul...

Bethell

I recently had a visit from an Australian man who was researching the Bethell family. One of his ancestors was Bethell from Sixmilebridge. That particular family no longer live in SMB, having left in c. 1912. Thanks to the 1901 & 1911 censuses online & Griffith's valuation, I was able to fill in som...

McNamara of Crusheen

I’m publishing this to see if it will trigger any memories of readers in the Crusheen area. My GGF, Timothy McNamara, was born in 1815 (1901 census), possibly in or near Crusheen.. In 1850 he was in Sixmilebridge, renting a house and 10ac. from Henry Butler of Castlecrine (Griffith’s valuation). In ...

Re: The Ennis Mills on Mill Road

Talk to Oliver Moylan (ex Ennis Cash Co.) about the Mills. I met him last Sunday when a group of us assembled in Quin for a talk & walk on mining in the Quin area.
He mentioned that the Mill was used for crushing stone to extract calcite during the 2nd. World War.

Re: looking for relatives in sixmilebridge area graveyards

The graveyards in Cratloe parish are Craughan (at the Cratloe end of the parish) and The Cillín (at the Sixmilebridge end). From the description you gave, it appears that you visited both of those. Your ancestors lived in Ballyliddane West, which is in Cratloe parish so those two graveyards are the ...

OS maps

Help needed!! Within the last week, somebody posted a link to a website which led me to another site which in turn had links to the 1st. edition of the 6" colour, 6" b&w and 25" maps, all for free!. I cannot now find the site. I tried searching and looked up my search history, but to no avail. Can s...

For those interested in the history of the workhouse in GB & IRL, see Peter Higginbotham's extensive web site: http://www.workhouses.org.uk. He has included photos and maps and descriptions of individual workhouses, including those of Co. Clare.

Re: Irish and Clare history book recommendations

Eddie Lenihan has written several articles in various issues of "The Other Clare" concerning holy (or blessed) wells in Crusheen and surrounding parishes. Modestly, I admit to having written an article in the Sixmilebridge parish magazine about these wells in the Sixmilebridge area. The above articl...

Re: High Noon at Sixmilebridge (1829)

I'm from Sixmilebridge. I hadn't heard of or read about this incident, so thanks to Paddy for publishing it. I'm assuming it was a faction fight rather than a political gathering as the crowd was armed. Sixmilebridge would not generally have been noted as a locale for faction fighting but that's pro...

Re: Highwaymen Wilson & Hartegans of Meelick apprehended (1773)

"Mittimussed" - now there's a word I hadn't heard of before. A quick Google revealed all! I wonder whether it's still in use. I assume the highwaymen plied their trade on the Wood Road, which runs from Cratloe towards Limerick. There are many reports of ambushes on that road down thro' the centuries...

Re: Dorothea Lange's photos of Clare people and places

Four of Ms. Lange's Bunratty photographs may be seen on the wall of The Creamery bar in Bunratty.

This bar is the former creamery. Some of the old creamery pipework and vessels were retained and incorporated into the bar's furniture.
