Re: Clare in the months July, August, September 1923

Hi Judy

I presume you have looked at the Clare Champion and Saturday Record for those months? Both available on microfilm in the NLI.

Good luck with assignment.

Re: Tom Steele and Miss Crowe

I've since found a 1867 Clare Journal article that confirms that it was Matilda Crowe that Tom Steele pined after.

Tom Steele and Miss Crowe

Are there any opinions out there as to whether it was Ellen or Matilda Crowe that Tom Steele yearned over from his rock beside the River Fergus? Different accounts differ as to which name. Clare Library says Matilda, but gives no source.

Thanks

Here I go again! Claire Santry's blog http://www.irishgenealogynews.com/ makes a point of warning when bank holidays will close various repositories - she gives dates and times for the principal ones, including those in Northern Ireland.

Re: Looking for Information - Thomas Landers & Bridget Clear

I'm not sure if you are forbidden to photocopy the Cancelled Books or not, just that it's much easier top photograph them. I forgot to mention that there is no longer a charge for looking through the books (there was none for O.A.P.s), though there is still a charge for photocopies - which implies t...

Re: Looking for Information - Thomas Landers & Bridget Clear

Hi Paddy Photography is the preferred option now in the Valuation Office, and I have photographed extensively from the Cancelled Books - only problem being my not very steady hand! I'm not positive about maps but I would expect them to be the same. Further to my last post re the National Library's G...

Re: Looking for Information - Thomas Landers & Bridget Clear

Paddy, I'm not sure exactly what changes you are referring to in the Valuation office for looking at and copying the Cancellation Books? They have put some of the books on a computerised database, but I'm almost certain that none of the Clare books have been computerised. Therefore I cannot say whet...

Re: Best Wishes to Maureen Comber and Anthony Edwards

Congratulations to Maureen and Anthony for public service careers that genuinely bettered their community. Hopefully they are leaving behind a system and ethos that will be able to continue their great work.

Re: 'Cearnach' McMahon

There's a lesson for me. I did not read to the end of the blog so didn't see Margaret's query. As I'm related to Margaret and the Gallery family of Ennis this obviously is of relevance to me. Thanks Jimbo.

Re: 'Cearnach' McMahon

Hi Darren I have posted before about a similar situation, with some echoes of your 'cearnach'. "Jane O'Dwyer of Kilrush, granddaughter of the well known Jenny Butler whose six daughters married Kenny, Shannon, Mahon , Kelly, O'Gorman and O'Dwyer. Known as the "Heads of Caun Francais" . I contacted a...

Re: Clare inquest reports - where are they archived ?

I read the Laurence Geary book on Medicine in Ireland a couple of years ago, but nothing has stuck in my mind (or my notes) about Inquests, but that's not to say there wasn't something, but it wasn't my focus. It is a highly informative and easily read book, with an extensive bibliography and is ava...

Re: The McMahon Archival Collection of Landed Estates in Cla

Hi Susan By all means contact the Archivist, but perhaps you might bear in mind that she is basically a 'one-man-band' and may not be in a position to provide the service that you would like. I don't know what her procedures are, and it's always worth asking, but such services are stretched very thi...

Sorry if I've confused anyone - I'm forever mixing up rootsweb and rootsireland - it is of course the latter that is under discussion.

Re: Resources Outside Clare

The principal resources that rootsweb.ie have are the Church records and Griffiths Valuation, but it appears not possible to get into the site without subscribing to fully assess what is available, and I can't remember if they only have Catholic records or Church of Ireland as well. Griffiths is ava...

Re: Sexton Miltown Malbay

Congratulations on persevering with those Kilfarboy records. Now you can find the baptism's of George's siblings ... and their marriages ... and their children ... and soon you will have lots of extra Christmas cards to send!!

Good luck
