Re: 19th C Illnesses~Marasmus (of the Brain)~Mental Retardat
Marasmus is described as malnutrition. I didn't find anything explicitly called "Marasmus of the Brain". Could Marasmus of the Brain be a euphemism for Mental Retardation? Hi Susan, The word “marasmus” comes from the Greek μαρασμός marasmos, meaning decay, and Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionar...

Here I go again! Claire Santry's blog http://www.irishgenealogynews.com/ makes a point of warning when bank holidays will close various repositories - she gives dates and times for the principal ones, including those in Northern Ireland. Lucille Thanks both of you. I've already added Claire Santry'...

Re: Looking for Information - Thomas Landers & Bridget Clear
Hi Paddy Photography is the preferred option now in the Valuation Office, and I have photographed extensively from the Cancelled Books - only problem being my not very steady hand! I'm not positive about maps but I would expect them to be the same. Lucille Hi Lucille, I'm so glad to hear that. Over...

Re: Looking for Information - Thomas Landers & Bridget Clear
Paddy, I'm not sure exactly what changes you are referring to in the Valuation office for looking at and copying the Cancellation Books? They have put some of the books on a computerised database, but I'm almost certain that none of the Clare books have been computerised. Therefore I cannot say whe...

Marie The first post on this forum is "Planning a visit to Clare - a vade mecum" which is a family history seeker's guide to visiting Clare, penned by that guru of good ideas, Paddy Casey. Thanks for the compliments, Murf. Glad it is of some use. As always I'd be grateful for updates, corrections a...

Re: Best Wishes to Maureen Comber and Anthony Edwards
This is indeed the end of an era. With the CLASP literature collection, the Tithe Applotments and Census transcriptions, the curating of an enormous collection of donated records, the maps with their invaluable overlays, the fully-indexed on-line collections of old photos and music, the folklore and...

Re: 'Cearnach' McMahon
He charged them 12,000 francs apparently - genealogy never comes cheap! Lucille Indeed, Lucille. It's difficult to put a value on those 12,000 francs but http://www.histoire-genealogie.com/spip.php?article398&lang=fr says "Un franc 1803 vaut environ 2,07 € 2006" so unless something catastrophic hap...

Hi Please can any one advise me as to how I can contact a local genealogist who can help me with my search for my family tree in Kilkee. Lyn Russell. Hi Lyn, Clare Roots Society might be able to put you in contact with someone who can help. See http://www.clareroots.org/index.php/research-requests ...

Now confirmed: all the Irish are from County Clare
Many suspected and most assumed that all the Irish are/were from County Clare. This has now been confirmed. See "Earliest evidence of humans in Ireland - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-35863186".

Re: Book: The Parish of Kilkeedy - A Local History
Yesterday Frank Brew's widow Nancy told me that she still has a few remaining copies of this book in mint condition. If you want one, just put €15 into an envelope and send it to Mrs Nancy Brew, Castlequarter, Tubber, Co.Clare, Ireland with your mailing address. It is pretty much The Word on the his...

Re: Gus and Mary Healy Church street Ennistymon
If no-one else pops up here to answer this question you might fire up www.eirphonebook.ie and select the Residential button and punch in 'Healy'. There are two Healys listed in Ennistymon. You could call one and ask about 'your' Healys. In my long experience this kind of cold calling is never resent...
