Re: Spouse not mentioned on headstone

I have several examples of this in my family tree, usually because the spouse died in a hospital (or someone's home) some distance away and family did not have the money to pay for carriage back to where other spouse is buried.

Re: Kilroy Family : Mayo connection to Clare

Thank you for the additional references Polycarp. I will need to plan how to access these from Oz! It will probably require paying a researcher to conduct some specific searches once I can work out the likely local clan family leaders. It's that critical 1700 to 1800 gap which is most off-putting. K...

Re: Kilroy Family : Mayo connection to Clare

Thank you Sharon for your fulsome reply, which offers ways forward for those of us trying to work back from the early 1800s in Clare. Unfortunately our state library doesn't have copies of any of the texts you have noted, except the James Frost one. The Irish Fiants resource sounds very useful - but...

Re: Edmond Murphy Committal 1844

Hi Murf - I have checked the convict records for NSW & VDL and cannot find any Edmond/Edmund Murphy/Murphey for that period. Have you checked the Griffiths Valuations to see if he is back in the place of abode prior to arrest?

Re: Valkenburg

Brilliant - thank you Patrick & Sharon, this is the John I was searching for. I cannot make out the occupation, best guess is "horn trader", which may fit in with other, although later, Sth African connections (may be earlier ones there not yet known to me). What do others make of the entry of his o...

Valkenburg

I am wondering if anyone on the forum has access to the US Ancestry.com records & would be kind enough to provide full details of an index I have found on Ancestry (I only have UK Heritage access). The spelling entry is John Velkenburg, born abt 1811 in Ireland, arrived NY 1851 on the ship Princess ...

Re: Carrig/ O'Connor

PS - further to Austin Finn, possibly being brother of Bridget Finn married to Martin Carrig (emigrated to NZ) - I have just found a death cert posted at Ancestry - showing Austin Finn's father as Denis Finn and mother as Bridget Connors; Austin born in Co Clare about 1836.

Re: Carrig/ O'Connor

The name Finn connected to NZ attracted my interest, as I have Finns (from Sligo) in NZ and thought I would check where the Bridget Finn, married to Martin Carrig settled in NZ. She and Martin can be found in the Otago district, with electoral rolls and a directory showing both living in Waitaki are...

Re: burren agriculture in the nineteenth century

Hi Matt - does Lewis's A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (1837) assist in any way? When a friend and I (visiting from Oz) did a guided walk (from the Corrofin end) last year we heard talk about some farming techniques using kelp brought from the coast and packed into the fissures between the lim...

Edward MacLysaght, The Surnames of Ireland

I note Paddy's comment re the names Minogue/Mannix/Monahan. I have been trying to find a copy of the MacLysaght book in a Sydney (NSW) library, with no success. Would any kind person with a copy to hand be able to provide info on the surname "Kierce/Kierse/Kerse". One blog stated the name is not nat...

Re: LYNCH family from THE GLEN, KILRUSH

Hi Joan - what ship did Deborah arrive on? it is highly possible there were Lynch and Moran family members on board? I've found many of my Ballarat family arriving in dribs and drabs with others related to them on same ship. I know yoy may have all this - but I notice there is only 1 Moran in Kilrus...

Re: LYNCH family from THE GLEN, KILRUSH

You have probably checked this source, but its an unusual name in the 1820s, with GenMaps showing only one landholder near Kilrush by name of Dundon: 1824 Tithes: Dundon Edm'd Moyasta, Kilfearagh (father, uncle or older brother of Patrick?) By the 1850's several more in the area, with two near Kilru...

Re: Clareabbey-Killone Parish Records pre 1853

The parishes list available at the Clarelibrary site indicate that the earliest records are:

Killone (civil) & Killone (RC) are 1863 (baptisms) 1863 (marriages)

& Clareabbey (RC) are 1853 (bap) & 1854 (marriages) - Parish address: the parish priest, Carecastle

Re: Question regarding visiting the library

Hi Blondie - I support Lucille's post - the Library is a wonderful treasure-trove and I wish I had spent more time there whilst on my visit to Eire last year. Note that Shiela is in the process of transcribing the RC Lisdoonvarna parish records, so you may find additional possible family connections...
