Re: Justice of the Peace: Duties, Criteria, etc 1870
S1nead, "Justices of the Peace dealt with less serious criminal matters. They could exercise their primary criminal jurisdiction, either summarily at petty sessions, or on indictment, where the justices presided with a jury at quarter sessions. They also conducted preliminary hearings for the assize...

Re: Michael CUSACK c1820 County Clare
Hello Bob. the Ennistymon parish magazine was published annually at Christmas from the mid 1980s to about 2002, and from 1990 included articles on houses in Ennistymon and surrounds and their occupants. The Clare Library has those articles online at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/on_pubs/e...

Re: Kinane Ancestry
I think you might need to broaden your search. While the name 'Kinane' may be rare in Clare, 'Kinnane' is not. Consistency of the spelling of Irish surnames is an issue when searching for ancestors. The Internet Surname Database lists O' Kinane, O' Kinnane, Kinnane, Quinane, Quinnane and others as p...

Here's a link to a photo of Browne's shop in Ennistymon, taken c 1968, possibly before Alex Browne extended the shop. Hector Browne in the photo was Alex's father, and Vinnie is his son. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the pub (or shop) to the left of Browne's in the photo. http://foto.clare...

Re: work in famine era workhouses
Quotes below from a few websites. It was a rule of the workhouse that everybody had to work. The women did domestic jobs such as cleaning or helping in the kitchen or laundry and looking after the sick. Older inmates were put to work mending clothes and spinning wool. Girls were trained for domestic...
