Sharon, it may well be a 'Family History Report' (on a Browne family) from the Clare Heritage and Genealogical Centre in Corofin that someone donated to their local library. According to the centre "The final report is presented in a Bound Book format".
Regards, Mike.

Re: Books - "Before the famine struck"; ""A starving people"
It's always as well to bear in mind that calamities and disasters in Irish history (famine, cholera etc) are usually part of a worldwide trend, though their effects may have been disproportionate in Ireland due to social conditions resulting from colonial exploitation of the mass of the people. Chol...

Re: history book recommendation?
Hi Barbara, these titles should be a good basis: "A History of Ireland: From the Earliest Times to 1922" by Edmund Curtis; "The Course of Irish History" by T. W. Moody; "The Oxford History of Ireland" by R. F. Foster and "Ireland: A History" by Robert Kee. They're all available on Amazon. Irish Hist...

Re: High Noon at Sixmilebridge (1829)
There's an interesting account of faction fighting in "Irish Peasants: Violence and Political Unrest, 1780-1914 by Samuel Clark and James S. Donnelly". Chapter 2 deals with "Caravats and Shanavests: Whiteboyism and Faction Fighting in East Munster 1802-1812" which says that the period between 1760 a...

Hi Paddy and Michael, Ignatius Murphy's book is actually called "Before the famine struck: life in west Clare, 1834-1845" He also published "A starving people : life and death in west Clare, 1845-1851". I'll try to make links to them here in the library's online catalogue. http://opac.clarelibrary.i...

Re: Corofin Biblical schoolhouse burned (1826)
Hi Paddy, there's a very good account of the whole situation regarding the evangelical 'colony' of Corofin at http://www.mybrethren.org/BIOS/by02jndw.htm, much of it based on the comments of one of Clare's noted historians, Ciarán Ó Murchadha. "In Clare the centre of the Evangelical Mission was Coro...

Thanks Sadhbh. I've had a look at the 1842 OS map on the library site and copied the section showing 'Burren or Mortyclough' and I'll try to post it here/attach it here.

Paddy,
as regards:
"William Kerin was mortally wounded by Daniel Callaghan at a hurling match in (the ?) Burren."
'Burren' might well be the townland of Burren in the parish of Kilchreest at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... burren.htm

Hi Chris. A quick search on Google for "ireland 1823 insurrection" brings up some interesting links to: "The main cause of civil unrest in Ireland in the 1820s was poverty combined with unemployment. The payment of tithes to the Church and onerous property rents to landlords were also constant sourc...
