Re: Margaret Brew, 19th century Kilrush authoress
Hi Roy, I presume you have seen the entry on Barry Duncan Gibbons in Brendan O'Donoghue's book on the Irish county surveyors (pp. 183-184). The following newspaper entry from 1853 might be relevant, perhaps. The Limerick Chronicle Saturday 26 March 1853 By the death of Mrs Campbell, of Aghnish, Dunc...

Five female inmates of Kilrush workhouse, 1861
It is a cause of great regret that admittance and discharge registers for the Clare workhouses have not come down to us. A report of a meeting of the Kilrush Board of Guardians ("Clare Freeman", Saturday 3 August 1861) gives us the names of five female inmates. All five women were enabled to leave t...

Have a look in the 1901 census in the Liscannor area, beside Ennistymon. A family is entered under the name Lillas in the 1901 census in Knocknaraha , Killaspuglonane. See the Clare library census of Clare under 62/3 (D.E.D. Liscannor, townland of Knocknaraha). In the 1911 census (see the National A...

Convicts, transportation, tickets of leave
The following interesting newspaper notice appeared in the "Limerick Chronicle" on Wednesday 9 May 1860. THE TICKET OF LEAVE SYSTEM IN CLARE. We learn that a large number of convicts, who were transported from the county of Clare during the years of disturbance, have recently returned to that county...

Re: FITZGIBBON (Crusheen/Sranagalloon) to LOBURN, New Zealan
Hi Shannon There is an estate rental in the county library in Ennis covering the years 1819 - 1822, as part of the O'Loghlen Papers. This rental includes Shranagalloon. Thomas Fitzgibbon is entered for the period 4 April 1820 up to 4th February 1822. It seems during this period he paid a grand total...

Thank you Sharon for this most interesting list.

The Fiants are also available in the county library in Ennis, in the Local Studies Centre. Two other good sources for the 17th century: The Irish patent rolls of James 1st, which covers the years circa 1603 - 1625 and published by the Irish Manuscripts Commission in 1966. This very large volume fami...

Hi Murf, The following account is given in the "Clare Journal" of 18th September 1913. It may not relate to the Morton family you ask after but it touches on issues you raise. Polycarp The Acting Master of the Ennis Workhouse [at an Ennis Board of Guardians meeting] reported that there was a man nam...

With reference to M. McNamara's post and Miss Butler of Kilfinaghty, I came across this paragraph in the Church of Ireland Gazette (30 August 1907) concerning the State Inebriate Reformatory in Ennis, a form of custodial detention for 'habitual drunkards'; there were many female drunkards detained i...

Hi Jim Sean Kierse, the expert on Killaloe, in his book Land And People Of Killaloe Parish, page 85, traces a Mrs Barton in Knockaderreen townland, parish of O'Briensbridge, as per the 1824 Tithes records. Hi Susan,
Perhaps your ancestor as the eldest son inherited his father's estate under the law of primogeniture, with his affairs administered on his behalf by the chancery division of the High Court. Your ancestor may have been a ward of court, perhaps.
