clare turf to limerick

In the nineteenth century much Clare turf was conveyed to Limerick along the Shannon. The Limerick Chronicle of June 3, 1857 notes that turf from Clare is being stored on the quayside. Some Harbour Board members felt that it should be moved on after 48 hours, others felt that no time restriction sho...

Re: Sceim na Scol/ Schools' collection on line

Thank you Paddy. The Meelick half parish material from the schoolchildren in the boys' school was supplemented by the teacher Eoghan O Neill interviewing an older woman, a Collins from Woodcock Hill, to get all she had to say. Children from Coonagh were substantial cosntributors to the Meelick colle...

Re: Agricultural Labourers in Clare in the 19th Century

Excellent topic Sheila. The post Famine history of the landless families in rural Ireland period deserves to be told. I am quite interested in personal accounts of what they felt as the land passed into ownership of the farmers leaving them on the sideline looking on. I don't know if anyone was inte...

Re: Meelick and Parteen Catholics 1868

Dear Jeff,
Thanks for your response.

I have two further lists of 1860 and 1864
farmers from the half parish of Meelick.
I you wish, I can print and post them to you.

My mother's family were Ringrose from the Meelick townland of
Buaile na Casca [Boulanacausk] where they still farm.

Meelick July 1915

As we know Meelick people had a significant part in the war of independence.
Here is a modest preliminary.
The Irish Independent of July 28, 1915 reported that the Meelick company of
the Irish Volunteers paraded in Limerick carrying pikes

Re: tithes clare 1820s

People listed in the tithe applotment books constituted only a portion
of those occupying land. Some of them had sub-tenants of whom no record appears.
There was a lot of subletting in pre-Famine Ireland.

Re: tithes clare 1820s

Thanks Sheila for such a comprehensive follow up to my query. I have been examining in detail the tithe applotment books for the parishes of Killeely and Saint Munchin that cover Meelick and the adjoining North Liberties of Limerick. Holders of even one acre had to pay. The exemption of grass land w...

Re: Williamite plantation of Clare post 1691

Thanks Sheila, I imagine that what Marcus Keane had to say was accurate. The Burtons were in Meelick until the 18th century at least, and gave their name to a townland. And built the Church of Ireland church at Punchbowl. Local tradition however ascribed an earlier Cromwellian origin to families suc...

Re: Williamite plantation of Clare post 1691

This extract from evidence given by the [infamous] Conyngham land agent Marcus Keane to a parliamentary commission of inquiry in 1881 mentions a Williamite plantation of Meelick. I may mention a case on part of Lord Conyngham’s estate at Meelick. About one hundred years ago it was let on leases for ...

Re: Williamite plantation of Clare post 1691

Many thanks SDuddy.

I will follow up your source.

One reason for the query is to discover how the
Conyngham estate got so much land in Clare,
including most of Meelick.

The Landed Estates website on the Conynghams
seems to point in the Williamite direction.
