Thank you, Sharon, for all the work you have done on Claremen who served in the American Civil War.

Re: Thomas J. Madigan, Sergeant Major U.S. Army, born in Kilrush
Hi Jimbo Thank you for that great post on the Madigans and the Brews. No love lost between that lot, I think! Yes, Paddy Waldron has done a lot of work sorting out the Brews in and around Kilrush. In a contributions on the topic of “Margaret Brew, 19th century Kilrush authoress” (http://www.ourlibra...

Re: Roughans in and near Ennis, 1821 census
I have received some biographical notes for three of the above Roughan families, the results of some further research by Michael O’Loghlen: (1) Re the Roughan family who lived at House 258 Mill Street: Anne Roughan. Death:- At Church Street, the wife of Mr Patrick Roughan, boot and shoe maker: Clare...

Victims of crash of Empress of the Skies, Apr. 1948
The crash of Pan American Clipper Empress of the Skies, at Moylan’s Crag, near Shannon Airport, on 15 Apr. 1948, is the subject of From a Rock to a Hard Place , by Tony Cassidy – see Clare Champion report on the book (11 Apr 2013): https://clarechampion.ie/ennis-book-commemorates-pan-am-crash/ These...

Re: Thomas J. Madigan, Sergeant Major U.S. Army, born in Kilrush
Another sister of Bridget Madigan, Mary, died in 1929, aged 20, but the cause is not tuberculosis; it is “probably disease of the heart”: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1929/04935/4340931.pdf. She was Mary Josephine, aged 2, in the 1911 census. So i...

Re: Thomas J. Madigan, Sergeant Major U.S. Army, born in Kilrush
Hi Jimbo, That thread on Thomas Madigan, whose will benefitted an orphan (chosen by the nuns), was water under the bridge I thought. It was really brave of you to dive back into it and dig up the mistakes. All those Mary Madigans! Could it be that Mary Madigan who died in 1937 in St. Joseph’s home f...

Re: Where is Cahirneen?
Hi David I think the eldest child was called Bridget. This is the record of the marriage of Bridget Considine to Dan O’Connor in 1900: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1900/10338/5763758.pdf. The 1901 census gives her age as 20, so born in 1881: ...

Re: Where is Cahirneen?
Hi David Here is my shot at Cahirneen. I think it may be the old name for part of the townland of Ballymulqueeny in the parish of Templemaley. I think it is the place called Cahercuneen in the transcription of Tithe Applotment Books for that parish: https://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealog...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,
Hi Jimbo The gate lodge for Ayle house, Ayle Lower, is still there. I did a virtual drive past it and see that it is looking very pretty. I think it is a typical gate house. I can't attach a photo as the attachment quota has been reached. And it is not important, anyway. In 1901, most of those who g...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,
Hi Jimbo I’m not sure that Malachy Kelly, Steward at Cragg House, lived in the gate house. The person who lived in the gate house or lodge house was usually the gatekeeper. Hugh Weir contributed an article, “Gate Lodges of Co. Clare” to The Other Clare , Vol. 15 (1991) – see The Other Clare contents...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,
In my post above I may have given the impression that I thought the Molonys of Cragg were planters, and, if so, I should say that the Molonys of Cragg were there from the early 17th century, if not longer. This is mentioned in the entry in the Landed Estates website: https://landedestates.ie/propert...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,
Hi Jimbo Thank you once again. It was interesting to read about the Molonys and Cragg House, and about marriages between Protestant and Catholics, and about the Cannys - also Malachy Kelly, the Steward, and Patrick Cusack. The mention of the trees still standing on what was once the Cragg house aven...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,
In the piece on Tulla (above), we are told “In 1829 a new Catholic Church was opened”. But where was the old church and what was it like? I think there must have been at least one church in the parish, and would like to know a little about it. In 1812 there were two Catholic churches in the parish o...
