Re: niece/nephew = grandchild ?
Another example from Limerick: Patk. Mann was a "nephew" in his grandfather's household in 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Limerick/Patrick_s_Well/Ballyanrahan_West/1495707/ By 1911, his grandparents were gone, his uncle was head of household, but Patrick Mann was stil a nephe...

Another example: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Clare/Drumellihy/Ballynagum_West/1078620/ Margaret McGrath (18) is described as "niece" of William Carey (70). She was his granddaughter, daughter of Thomas McGrath (52) and Johanna Carey (50), who are at http://www.census.nationalarc...

Re: Conntae an Chláir a triocha agus a tuatha
Thanks, Sharon. Triocha (literally "thirties") and tuatha (literally "lands") were old administrative divisions, long pre-dating the division of Ireland into counties. There is an explanation at http://www.forgottenbooks.com/readbook_text/The_Gaelic_State_in_the_Past_Future_or_the_Crown_of_a_Nation_...

Conntae an Chláir a triocha agus a tuatha
I was surprised to learn recently of this work and of its distinguished author, a native of the townland of Lacken in Kilmihil parish: Author Ó hÓgain, Séan. Title Conntae an Chláir a triocha agus a tuatha. Imprint Baile Átha Cliath : Oifig an tSoláthair, (1938). The book is widely available in the ...

Special census of Gaeltacht regions, 1925
It was mentioned by Philip Fogarty of NUIG in his lecture to Kilrush & District Historical Society on Tuesday 29 September 2015 that a special census of the Gaeltacht was taken in August 1925. Many genealogists seem to be unaware of this potential source. The best details of this census that I can f...

Re: Newtown House
Caherfeenick is in Doonbeg DED even though it is in a different parish. In fact, one cannot get from one end of Doonbeg/Killard parish to the other without either going through Caherfeenick or wading across the Scivileen River! The little that I have on the Brews of Doonmore is at http://pwaldron.in...

Re: Newtown House
Perhaps it is more than coincidence that Newtown House in Doonbeg appears to have fallen into ruin at about the time that Newtown House in Newtown East was built or named! There is a similar situation in Kilrush - when the Vandeleurs' Kilrush House burned in the 1890s, the Glynns claimed the name fo...

I have researched both Newtown Houses extensively, Sheila. There are then and now pictures of Newtown House in Newtown East townland at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.583801528309940.1073741832.583616304995129 Up to 1867, it was part of the estate of Francis Brew. Details of the sale of t...

Re: niece/nephew = grandchild ?
Another example in a Church of Ireland family where nobody spoke Irish: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Clare/Kilrush_Rural/Carnaun/363661/ Cissie O'Donnell was the daughter of John George O'Donnell and Rachel Brew, but was described as `niece' by her maternal grandparents. Her pare...

Re: Ann Garry of Danganelly, m. Edmund Murphy 1891
I had a look at the Buglers. It looks like Peter Bugler (who married Daniel Joseph Garry's widow) was a nephew of Mr P Bulger of Castleroberts (who attended the funeral of Daniel's second cousin once removed Michael Garry). I don't see any close connection between the Tubridys. The ancestors of Tom ...

How annoying that multiply.com is long gone!
I noted that Kevin added useful comments about the Callinans there, clearly after the Wayback Machine harvested the page for the one and only time:

Re: Ann Garry of Danganelly, m. Edmund Murphy 1891
I have recently discovered that the twice-widowed D J Garry, whose second wife's obituary appears above, married a third time, on 30 January 1918 to Anne Tubridy, daughter of Stephen Tubridy and Anne Fitzgerald. After D J Garry's death on 12 June 1927, his widow remarried on 25 February 1936 to Pete...

Lewis's Topography says that Ballybrood civil parish is part of the Catholic parish of Caherconlish. There is a John Connor in the right month and year and parish at http://limerick.rootsireland.ie/view_detail.php?recordid=1857948&type=bch&recordCentre=limerick&page=1 Church Baptism Record Name: Joh...

Less than a week after I first heard of "Bishop Ireland's Connemara Experiment" from Jimbo above, it was the subject of the "On This Day" item on Drivetime on RTÉ Radio 1 this evening. Listen back here:
