Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Just some musings here: When Irish veterans of the American Civil War are mentioned together with Upstate New York, I think of the crazy* attempts at invasion of Canada by the Fenians – meant to force Britain to cede independence to Ireland. I probably have no concept of the distances between Steube...

Killard Baptisms 1855-1881 and Marriages 1867-1881

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Sharon, how did you fit all that into such a short space of time! I looked at the 1875 census and decided that Francis, aged 7, might be Francis McNamara, son of Tom McNamara and Judy Neil, who was baptised in Tulla on Oct. 10, 1867. The address is Tyreda – not Glendree. There are no other children ...

A scene from Glenomera 1828

Rachel Hewitt, in her book, ‘Map of a Nation – a biography of the Ordnance Survey’ (Granta, 2010), devotes two chapters (pp. 235-288) to the making of the Ordnance Survey 1842 map of Ireland, which began in 1824. She mentions some of the problems encountered by the officers, including hostility from...

Re: An unusual twin birth, Coolmeen 1872

Hi Murf I imagine that one twin was born before midnight and the other in the early morning - then mother and babies began to “do well”, we hope. My feeling is that the first twin was doing badly after birth and the priest was sent for. It may be that the mother seemed in danger of dying too and tha...

Re: Kilmacduane Baptisms 1854-1881 and Marriages 1853-1867

In 1926 Fr. Ryan added this list of priests to his transcription of Kilmacduane baptisms (see page 182 online: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634694#page/182/mode/1up Names of Priests who ministered in this parish in so far as the names are ascertainable. Kilmacduane and Kilmihill were on...

Re: Kilmacduane Baptisms 1854-1881 and Marriages 1853-1867

Thanks Murf It looks like Fr. P. Ryan had a lot of difficulty with that trancription, and does not seem to have been the first priest who struggled to put some order on the records: on page 34 (online) of the marriage register, Fr. Ryan says, “ The year 1859 seems to have been the first that a regul...

Re: Parish Records - Transcribers Register

Hi Murf

I’ve completed Kilmacduane. It was a transcription made in 1926, in very clear handwriting, so I got through it easily enough. My next cabbage leaf is Killard. Again this is a transcription and I expect to have completed it by the beginning of March.

Re: Calloo family

Hi Kerrie There’s a gap in the Tulla parish register of baptisms from Feb. 1822 to Sept. 1825 – probably some pages were loose and fell out and were lost. So the baptism of Michael in 1824 is lost, I’m afraid. When I was checking for Michael, I found the baptism of James on May 22, 1828 - I had give...

A scene from Killaloe pier, Autumn 1852

Some Clare people emigrating in the middle of the 19th century went by steamer from Killaloe northwards through Lough Derg to Athlone. I imagine they then went on the train to Dublin. And then on to Liverpool. John Forbes, who wrote a travel book on Ireland in Autumn 1852 (http://www.askaboutireland...

Re: Gavin family Tulla

Hi Murf I can’t believe my stupidity. I saw that record and it didn’t register with me. Here might be the reason: I noticed that the landlord for both of the Gavins mentioned in Griffiths was Col. Wyndham, so I looked at West Sussex Record Office Online Catalogue and entered PHA 4548 in the Quick Se...

Hi Linda again

I got in a muddle there – I should have been looking for the death of Anne Gavin – not Mary. But I can't find the death of Anne Gavin either.
