Re: Father John Murphy(1789-1831) - A Biographical Sketch

Hi Murf Thanks for that article on Fr. Murphy. I made his acquaintance when I transcribed the baptisms he recorded (in Latin of course) between 1818 and 1831 :) . For more on Fr. Murphy read Michael Mac Mahon’s article “Education in the Parish of Corofin”: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/hi...

Re: Carrig/ O'Connor

Hi Blondie It’s going to be difficult to find any records for Hannah O’Connor nee Fitzgerald, who was born about 1807. The Carron parish records, which have survived, start at 1853. My feeling is that Hannah belongs to the Fitzgeralds who are shown living in the parishes of Killilagh and Kilmoon in ...

Re: Question about Birth Cert

Hi Kate That baptism record shows that when the child was being baptised the priest was aware that the mother was about to marry the father, or had by then already married the father. So he gave the child both surnames – that of the mother and that of the father. And then he gave the father’s name (...

Re: Anything to read on the making of the 25 inch map?

Hi Jimbo I did a bit of homework and looked that 1901 census - see attached. I entered “Ordnance” and looked at those 28 people, and sure enough, as you say, there are only 6 from Scotland. Then I entered “Sapper” and got 3 more, but none from Scotland. Then I entered “Engineer” and got 3 more, who,...

Re: migration from county to county

Hi Blondie Yes, people did move from county to county. There would have been a lot more commercial interaction and social interaction between Co. Kerry and Co. Limerick and South-west Clare than there would have been between South-west Clare and East Clare, for instance. Likewise there was much inte...

Re: Anything to read on the making of the 25 inch map?

Hi Jimbo Thank you very much for all that work and for finding that informative newspaper article. I’m very pleased. I thought my query would sink quickly and quietly to the bottom of the page. If the officers, typically, were from Scotland, I think it might have been a historical thing. The “Office...

Re: Anything to read on the making of the 25 inch map?

Hi Lucille Thanks very much. I’m so pleased to know I’m not entirely alone in this odd interest of mine. Yes, I’ve written to Richard Kirwan, saying ‘Dear Mr. Kirwan, thank you for ‘If Maps could Speak’, but what you have written in Chapter 10 on the making of the 25 inch is not enough – I want to k...

Re: Anything to read on the making of the 25 inch map?

Hi Sharon Thanks for noting that and sending it to me. I looked it up online and found that it deals with the first half of the 18th century, which is not exactly what I want just now, but I will keep the name of the lecturer in mind. I had a flash of inspiration after I posted my query: I will writ...

Re: Parish Records - Transcribers Register

Hi Murf

I've completed Knockera baptisms and marriages, and the Kilmurry McMahon deaths will be ready tomorrow. Then it's St. Senan's which will take until early May I think - there's a lot of it. You can put my name down for it now, please.

Knockera (Killimer) baptisms and marriages 1859 - 1880

Here is my transcription of Knockera (Killimer) baptisms 1859 – 1881: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634737#page/1/mode/1up Note that very often it's the mother’s married name, rather than her maiden name, which is given. I hope I have not made too many mix-ups of Canty, Carey, Casey and ...
