Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Sharon and Jimbo This thread is flying on so quickly! I wanted to reply to Sharon, but, by the time I'd composed my reply, there was more from you, Jimbo. I wanted to read your latest more carefully, and reply tomorrow, but I know that the question re the identity of Rev. Mr. Quinlivan will be "h...

Roughans in and near Ennis, 1821 census

Philip Crossle (1875-1953) made notes of the 1821 census of Ennis and nearby townlands. The notes include about 1,074 names, with their locations. The notes do not reflect the entire census: Crossle has selected only some surnames. The Roughans living in, or near Ennis constitute about ten percent o...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo Sorry, I confused the post of Master of the Workhouse with School Master. Yes, I did use the link you provided for the topic “Quinlivan of Ballyroughan” and I read it all, but did not think there was any contradiction between the Ballyroughan Quinlivans having a priest (or two) and the Garr...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo Today I will send for the death record for the Thomas McNamara who died in 1869, aged 58. If that age is correct, Thomas was born in 1811 and aged only 17 when Mary McNamara was baptised on 14 Dec 1828, but it’s quite possible that his age at death was underestimated. There are only three o...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Well, I can’t be sure that Matthew Keane was the son-in-law of the James Quinlivan who died in 1879. I see now that the other James Quinlivan died on 15 Jun 1883, aged 71, and the informant is Matthew Keane again: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1883...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo, Back again and continuing with the Quinlivans for a moment. This record, dated March 1822, of the marriage of a Quinlivan girl (no first name), from Garura, to Tim Linane, from Clouney, gives the witnesses as Lau. Quinlivan, Garrura, Thomas Quinlivan, Garrura, Bridget Kerwick, Tulla: https...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo, Good work on the Quinlivans of Rath in Garrura. There are Quinlivans in the townland of Ballyroughan, Quin parish. That townland is adjacent* to the townland of Rathluby, but those Quinlivans, as you say, are probably relatives of the Quinlivans in Garrura. A Michael Quinlivan lived in Bal...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Sharon and Jimbo Thank you both for interesting material and helping to make famine times in the Tulla area a bit clearer. Sharon, thank you for helping to fill the gap I’d left in my notes. The letter from the Board of Guardians to the [Poor Law] Commissioners was written after the site of the n...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo I see now that Garruragh House and Garruragh Castle are in the same location. The last edition of the 6 inch map shows “Garruragh Castle” where "Garruragh House" is marked in the first edition. See second last map ("MapGenie 6 inch last edition map") in the gallery of maps here: https://web...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo I am trying to stay with the Fever Hospital in Tulla until we find out where it was located, but, as always, getting distracted. There's a sentence or two on Tulla on page 54 of this "Correspondence from January to March, 1847, relating to The Measures Adopted for the Relief of the Distress...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo Very interesting, indeed. About the Fever Hospital: during Clare Library History Week, last month, I read this article, “Remembering the events in Tulla parish while under the occupation of the British Military Forces”, by Jane Halloran Ryan and Stephen Kelly. The article is in four parts, ...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Elizabeth Grant, quoted above, is the maiden name of Elizabeth Smith, and she is probably better known as Elizabeth Smith. It is as Elizabeth Smith she is referred to in The Irish Famine, an illustrated history , by Helen Litton (Wolfhound Press, 1994). I like that little book very much, and recomme...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo Thank you for all that research, including the newspaper reports, which explain a lot. Indeed, you have the makings of an article on the two Garruragh Workhouses right there. Good to hear that the canvas tents, used since 1847, were replaced by wooden huts in 1850. Jimbo, I agree with almos...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

How so many could be accommodated in Garruragh House is truly mystifying, but it seems there was a shelter with a canvas roof erected at Garruragh. This is referred to in an article entitled “'The Late Disastrous Epidemic’ Medical Relief and the Great Famine “, by Laurence M. Geary – see page 57: ht...
