Re: Terry Alt movement, early 1800s, Clare

I have a bit of peripheral interest in this as my gt gt gt grandfather was Edmond Kenny. He was high constable of Inchiquin and was a land agent for George Synge in the early 1800s and lived at Carhue (Carhoo) Dysert. His son William was I think also a land agent. William moved to Cragleigh about 18...

Tricia Martin Taaffe of Erinagh and Drumcavin was my gt gt grandfather. Paddy Waldron kindly passed on some of the info you sent him. You are missing my gt grandmother Minnie Taaffe an elder daughter of Martins who married David Gallery of Ballybeg Ennis my gt grandfather. My family kept in touch wi...

No unfortunately. They may be children, they may be nephews or cousins or wives or siblings brothers-in law. In my own research they have nearly always turned out to be relatives but not necessarily children. If you can get a look at the original leases they often specify the relationship. The Inchi...

Re: Question regarding education occupations

In the 19th century a lot of the schools were fee paying still and not everyone went to school. There were some non fee paying schools but if their curriculum included bible studies the Catholics would not go. If you look at the 1901 census you will see a lot of people could not read or write. Those...

Re: Finding family ancestors' before Tithe & Griffith report

The only reliable earlier sources that I have found may not be a lot of help to you. 1. Newspaper marriage and death announcements (not every family did them mine did) 2. land leases (the inchiquin patpers which probably wont help with Moyarta). The Fflolliott index (for marriage and death announcem...

Re: Dividing up Connaught and Thomond, 1576

Conor Gallery of Cragbrien also signs. My family's oral history says that is my branch of the Gallerys - we are unlikely to confirm that, though Nicholas Smith O'Gorman says in 1861 that the Gallerys of Ennis were a big help to the O'Gorman Mahon in the Clare elections and said that they were very n...

Esquire title

Hi I would love to know how Esquire was used in the 19th and 20th centuries. My father who always used it said it meant that you had land (he did not specify how much). When I look at my family in the 19th century only those who actually owned some acreage used Esquire otherwise they used Mr. The de...

Millanneenbeg "Shayley" 1815

Can anyone track down this placename for me ? I have tried the obvious Clare library website options. I think it is in the Dysert Corofin or general Burren area (most likely) I have nothing else to tie it down. I am looking for the modern day townland and parish

Millanneenbeg "Shayley" 1815

thanks
