Re: Irish Civil Registration Indexes at pilot.familysearch.org
Another glitch: I found my third cousin once removed Bridget Gibson in the 1911 census of Fodry aged 3 months. I knew she died as a child. The nearest match that I could find in the death indexes was: Name: Bridget Gibson Registration district: Kilrush Record type: DEATHS Registration date - quarter...

There is an obituary of the above-mentioned Fr Mecham online at http://www.catholicweekly.com.au/print.php?articleID=3633&class=News&subclass=CW%20National Also a lecture by Fr. Sarah If you search at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_IGI.asp?clear_form=true for William Ryan with father John Ryan born in British Isles/Ireland/Clare, you will find four possibilities between 1867 and 1873. Unfortunately, no fewer than three of the four have mother's first name...

Re: Occupiers of a bog
I have heard rumours that the theft of turf from Clare bogs has reached epidemic proportions in recent years. It never occured to me before that this might arise from regulations which forbid people from burning their own turf but which say nothing about burning one's neighbours' turf! \pw PS: I pre...

Re: Occupiers of a bog
You would be justified in your assumption, except that in Clare (and most parts of Ireland that I am familiar with) the fuel extract from bogs (also known as `turf bogs') is known as `turf' not `peat'. The occupiers in Griffith probably had what are known as `turbary rights' - see http://www.ipcc.ie...

Re: Griott(e) or Greo of Ballymorris and Brickhill, co. Clare
Thanks, Sharon.
I found those and a few other bits and pieces yesterday. There's a website by a Greo descendant Jim Corbett at http://conniemackey.com/tree.php
I've spoken to Jim before and sent him an e-mail yesterday.
I'll post an update here when I have heard from Jim.

Griott(e) or Greo of Ballymorris and Brickhill, co. Clare
I just learned of the 1882 marriage of Margaret Frost and Francis Griott and decided to do a very quick and rough one name study of a rare Clare surname which seems to have become extinct by the mid 20th century. Here's a quick summary of a couple of hours work. The pedigree is speculative in places...

Re: Who Lived in Knockbeha Cottage, Feakle?
Agreed. I would visit the Valuation Office in the Irish Life Centre in Dublin if I wanted to confirm who was the occupier recorded for a particular property on a particular date. As you now know the townland and the occupier and plot number at the time of Griffith's Valuation, it is fairly straightf...

Re: Who Lived in Knockbeha Cottage, Feakle?
I'm afraid I can't add much on Knockbeha in the early 1920s. You will have to wait for Knockbeha Cottage to be listed at http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/property-show.jsp?id=2089 In Griffith's Valuation, the house with the greatest valuations in Knockbeha were those of John M'Art...

Re: Inheritances, bequests by Clare emigrants to U.S., Austr
Hi Sharon Thanks for all the additional information. I figured out the 'Jane Doe' convention. You have probably figured out likewise that 'dry goods' in North America is more or less synonymous with 'drapery' in Europe. Mrs Webber's absence from the 1910 U.S. census may be accounted for by the fact ...

There is a legal notice listing the Talty heirs and properties in the Miami Daily News and Metropolis of Saturday, 23 Apr 1927, at http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=5AYtAAAAIBAJ&sjid=htQFAAAAIBAJ&pg=6565%2C915341 Note that the wives of the married heirs are all named `Jane' if the court officials...

Re: Inheritances, bequests by Clare emigrants to U.S., Australia
Since last Tuesday, I have had on loan the very voluminous file on the Talty Millions case which built up in the office of Michael Killeen and Co., solicitors, in Kilrush. I have learned an awful lot of fascinating new information from a quick skim through this file, which is surely one of my greate...

Re: Irish Civil Registration Indexes at pilot.familysearch.org
Another inexplicable quirk of this website: I found Veronica Mary Graham, aged 5 months, born King's County, living with her parents and siblings in Shinrone in the 1911 census. (Her paternal grandmother was Mary Frost from Portdrine, county Clare.) To confirm their birth dates, I tried to find the ...
