Re: Did John Clancy from Clare marry his brother's widow (1924)?
Thanks to Fiona for her follow-up e-mail alerting me to the discussion of this subject on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deceased_Wife%27s_Sister%27s_Marriage_Act_1907. It says, inter alia, "The Deceased Brother's Widow's Marriage Act (Northern Ireland) 1924 was passed to remove doubts as t...

Re: Church of Ireland patron list 1818
Lewis's topography (1837) generally mentions the patron of each parish, e.g. for Kilconry (near Shannon Airport): "The parish is in the diocese of Killaloe; the rectory forms part of the rectorial union of Tomfinlough or Traddery, in the patronage of the Earl of Egremont; and the vicarage is part of...

Did John Clancy from Clare marry his brother's widow (1924)?
My paternal grandparents had several first cousins in the Royal Irish Constabulary who met violent deaths, including Patrick (Paddy) Clancy of Killard. The RIC was disbanded on 31 Aug 1922 and Paddy was shot dead in Cork less than six weeks later. The Irish Times of 16 Oct 1922 p.6 reported the inci...

Sharon I have asked some of my Clare Roots Society colleagues who have more experience than I have of the Killaloe Diocesan Archives to post here. You will find some comments on Catholic Diocesan Archives generally at http://www.cigo.ie/campaigns_church.html My Doonbeg researcher has kindly taken ti...

Baptists in Clare, 1832
A report from Rev. Wm. Thomas in the Baptist Magazine, vol. 24, at http://books.google.ie/books?id=QeYRAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA214#v=onepage&q&f=false mentions: Patrick Gunning, Sabbath Reader, at Ballycar Augustine Thynne, Itinerant Irish Reader, at Roadford John Nash, Sabbath Reader, at Bog Mount, near Kilr...

Re: Fr. Laurence Browne
Hi Sharon Thanks for all your efforts but sorry to tell you most of what you have found are red herrings! The Laurence Browne in whom I am interested and his probable cousins were all priests of the Diocese of Killaloe (Diocese of Limerick in the case of Bishop O'Dwyer), so they were not members of ...

Fr Laurence Browne (d.1909) of Darragh; PP Tubber & Doonbeg
Can anyone out there tell me the names of the parents of Fr. Laurence John Browne? Fellow forumite Paddy Casey tells me that Fr. Browne was a native of Darragh, Ennis. He studied in Maynooth and was ordained in Nenagh in 1857. From 1869 to 1877 he was Curate in Kilkee (Paddy Nolan, "A History of Kil...

Dispensary and Registrar's Districts
In all that has been written about the confusing proliferation of administrative subdivisions in Ireland, I have read very little about Dispensary and Registrar's Districts. These were a layer between the Poor Law Union and the District Electoral Division. Experienced researchers will be familiar wi...

Re: forename "Attie"
I have just come across a reference to an Atty O'Donnell whose full name was Arthur.
So it appears that Atty and Attie were used as diminutives of quite a variety of both male and female names!

Re: Timekeeping in rural Clare - Maurer of Ennis
One of the Maurers today is involved in a profession just as intricate as clock repairs - heart surgery! He opened the 2008 Merriman Summer School and this biography appears at http://www.merriman.ie/scoileanna/2008/samhradh/cainteoiri.en : Brian Maurer Brian is Medical Director of the Irish Heart F...

1930s Schools' Manuscript Collection now online
There are images of about 154 manuscripts from Co. Clare accessible via http://ivrla.ucd.ie/ivrla/collection?pid=ivrla10-:22770&tab=1 The DjVu viewer is required to read the original manuscripts. The links seem to be out by one - clicking on a heading in the list brings up the item described by the ...

Re: rootsireland.ie
Thanks for finding that little gem buried away on rootsireland.ie The obvious conclusion from the main menu on all the rootsireland.ie pages would be that there is no County Heritage Centre at all for Clare. I will be at that 'Genealogy Day' and will make sure to ask the relevant question in the unl...

Re: rootsireland.ie
Several weeks have passed and I have now calmed down slightly and revisited http://www.rootsireland.ie/ This is after all a Clare forum, so I am surprised that there has been no mention on this thread of the absence of Clare records on the above website. It shows that there is apparently no `County ...

A few quick follow-ups to the advice from Paddy Eile above ... The England & Wales death index at http://www.ancestry.com will show you that the Patrick Tuohy whose death was registered in the second quarter of 1980 in Luton district was born on 28 Nov 1913. His birth was registered in Scarriff Unio...
