It is possible that he liked to use an Irish name - Irish for Denis is Donnacha - and the Irish for Daniel is Donal - so maybe DONAL was easier to understand.

Hi- to see more info on local history at the time the Russells were in Kilrush - go to www.bureauofmilitaryhistory.ie - and search for Michael McMahon, Kilrush - his witness statement was done in 1957. Just to add to prev. info - I see on Clare fm obituaries that 'Mikey Fennell, Fodera, Kilbaha, died at St. Joseph's Hospital, Ennis, - buried in Kiltrellig Cemetery after 11 o'c. Mass this morning - Monday - May 12 - 2014.'
